protoViolence - Definitive Edition

OHHHH MY GODDD!! After playing malViolence - Definitive Edition and not getting as much story as I wanted out of the first game this prequel rounds everything out so well! I adored the writing of this game so much and it made what was out for the Violence series all the more worth playing. Again the art was fantastic as well as the VA and I am just so excited for more to come out of this team. 100% recommend if you haven't played the malViolence - Definitive Edition as well as this game please do! It was well worth the read and really rounds out the whole series. Thank you TeamViolence for introducing me to such a wonderful series!

finally gotten around to finish this game and im genuinely surprised how well-written and plot heavy (in a good way) it is!!! i wasnt expecting it at all most likely due to my experience playing the first game, malViolence (another really good game!!!!! if you love puzzles) but i am not complaining whatsoever as someone who adores visual novel, this might be one of the ones that will be ingrained in my brain for YEARS.

Finally got around to finishing it and it was well worth it. Amazing story that builds on malViolence. Can't wait for interViolence

So Mado reached out to me asking if I wanted to play the Violence Series a while ago, being a big fan of Visual Novels, I of course said yes. After I sank my teeth into what malViolence had to offer, I knew I had play the prequel immediately after. What I didn't expect, was a haymaker in the gut. Whereas malViolence hints at the dark world the characters inhabit, protoViolence pulls back the curtain to expose all of the grime and grim-dark elements that makes the main characters who they are. It has to be the most disturbed I've felt in a while regarding Sci-fi Fiction, but at the same time, it was just the right amount of raw shock and horror this origin story deserved. Each of the characters felt human, flawed and vulnerable. The visuals were innocent to begin with, lulling me into a false sense of security that was smashed later on. Listening to certain voice lines hurt my soul in ways I didn't expect. I felt the exact same things that Dr. Deidre was feeling thanks to this amazing coordination of artistic expression. WOW. I think this is one of the most interestingly directed visual novels I've played in a while. And I mean directed. A lot of this felt so cinematic, the characters will move quite a lot more than one would expect from a dynamic VN, and it really adds a lot to how the story gets delivered. The way you navigate the story as well reminds me a lot of Heaven Will Be Mine, where we see Deidre's personality at different levels of formality through her texts, her actual work, her interviews with Pavel, and her diary. The way that you're given a choice of what order you experience these in is also really interesting, and makes the game flow very well, making the player feel less like you're just there to read, and really puts you in Diedre's head. There are some incredible shots in the CGs, the voice work is magnificent, everything comes together in such a lovely, heart destroying way. I owe Cautionne a few shopping trips. I hope the developers are incredibly proud of this game, because it didn't feel like a single second was wasted.

I did not play malViolence before protoViolence, but that did not stop me from enjoying this story. Honestly? Very pretty art, solid (though small) cast of characters, and a story that is both fantastic and kind of... upsetting. Been quite a while since I had been so emotional about tiny people on my computer screen. My only two complaints would be the music, which is kind of way too much in the background, and a pretty unusual but redundant way to choose what to see next (clicking between 4 different objects).
