About Pulsen

Pulsen is a music and rhythm game featuring 85 songs. Core gameplay is easy to learn but hard to master, and involves hitting four directional arrows to the beat of the music as they pass by the screen. Every song has five or more difficulties and its own set of challenging arrow patterns and play style. Score is determined by how well arrows are hit in time with the music. Song experiences can be enhanced and customized with numerous song modifiers, settings, and arrow noteskins. Compete against a friend locally and compare scores with friends in-game on Steam.

Negative reviews seem to be mostly from people who are just mad to actually have to pay for the work artists have put into songs and mappers have put into charts. I personally am not a fan of being a freeloader and playing copyrighted songs so this game gets my full support. Furthermore, the charts are nice and vibe well with the music, and most of the songs are good too. I also like how they're unique, since I play so many rhythm games, and many of them have similar songs. So this game is a nice addition to my rhythm game library for sure! I also find the charts to be of higher quality than a lot of the ones that one can find in games people recommend to play instead of this. Also the difficulties are perfectly fine. I guess the people calling it 'easy' are used to the kind of trash high difficulties most free vertical scrolling rhythm games churn out. But in any good triple A rhythm game I've played, the difficulty isn't about eyeraping you with bulky overcharted maps paired with insane carpal tunnel inducing button mashing that makes NO sense with the music at all. It's impressive if you can do it, sure. But it isn't fun to look at, nor to play imo. Gotta be able to vibe with t…

Despite what Steam compatibility may tell you, Pulsen works great on Deck besides a few minor bugs. If your like me, this is your best bet for a DDR styled game at home. Developers, I beg you to keep updating Pulsen in 2025. Please.

So, for those who don't know, Pulsen here is a fork of Stepmania. And, I think that honestly raises the question of "why pay for Pulsen when Stepmania is free?" It's a decent question, and I'd say that what makes *this* worth it is that it's a "curated" set of high quality charts in a convenient package. (It's not quite curated. As far as I'm aware, all the charts in Pulsen were created for Pulsen. None were pulled from elsewhere. But, "curated" what the best way I could think to describe it.) With Pulsen, you're not spending time finding charts, installing charts, etc., and you know that the charts present are *good* charts. If you're new to Stepmania and related games, Pulsen is a wonderful way to get into it. And, if you're a Stepmania veteran, I still think the selection of charts in Pulsen make it well worth the time and money. So, yes. I would *highly* recommend Pulsen. I've been playing it since 2012, well before it was on Steam, and there's a reason I still come back to it a decade later.
