The All New Story
To reboot the narrative, Toxic Games brought in industry veteran Rob Yescombe, writer on franchises including CRYSIS, ALIEN: ISOLATION, STAR WARS and PS4’s upcoming RIME; winner of Best Thriller Screenplay at the Creative World Awards, and the screenwriting Award of Excellence at the Canada International Film Festival.

“The Director’s Cut is a single-location thriller” says Yescombe, “It’s about figuring out what the Qube is, and why you’re inside it. You’re told you are an astronaut inside some kind of alien structure hurtling towards Earth, but it’s also about something deeper than that.”
Under the surface, there is a subtext about games themselves – “We are conditioned to expect death and doom. We’re resigned to it. At its heart, this story is about that state of mind and how it effects the way we view our experiences, in games and in life. The Director’s Cut will feel either heroic or unnerving, depending on your own personal trust issues.”

A steady 3-5 hour venture, with unique mechanics and the occassional challenging puzzle, though nothing insanely difficult, at least in the base game. An obvious Portal-derivative, which the game does not shy away from acknowledging. The story is servicable, but provides some level of tension, and compliments the atmosphere. Also ran smoothly on my ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ laptop. Absolutely worth an arvo playthrough, especially at that price.

this one is hard to rate because it was fun, but the storyline felt a bit short. however at the final sections the puzzles started feeling a bit repetitive, so I feel like if it was any longer it would get pretty boring ? so yeah. overall i recommend it, specially if it's on sale. one thing to note though, there's only one slider to control all the audio in the game and there aren't any subtitles, so if you're hard of hearing or just has trouble concentrating on speech when there's a whole lot of background noise, you'll miss a bunch of the narration because some areas are just extremely noisy. that pissed me off a lot.

Some good puzzles, some less so, but over all worth playing through. I also checked out the included DLC after beating the game and found it fun for a bit and not what I expected at all. XD Edit: After reading other reviews I tried the non-Director version and I sadly agree that the added story and accopanying change in atmosphere and feeling of wanting to push the story forward hurts the game, which makes me sad because I liked the story. Made me smile.

This isn't a strong Do Not Buy recommendation, but this game is just... It's fine? The story feels grafted on—as it in fact is, having been added for the Director's Cut—and none of the puzzles are particularly interesting. Even the puzzle that awards you an achievement for beating "the hardest puzzle in the game" isn't one that requires a ton of thought so much as it requires annoying control fiddling to execute the solution. A few of the puzzles are also subject to the classic physics-based puzzle problem of the solution not working on rare occasions because the physics put something very slightly out of alignment. You can easily reset and repeat, so this is only a minor annoyance, but it is still an annoyance. If you do want to play this game, though, the fans seem to be in near unanimous agreement that you should get the 10th Anniversary Edition instead of this older one, so even then, I can't really recommend this. [I received this free many years ago for having previously purchased the (no longer available) original version of the game, which was also just sort of fine.]

Fiddly, glitchy, unreliable. The slow reaction of the controls and blocks boils my blood. Maybe I lack the brains to get past sector 6, but the molasses game feel is absolutely not helping me think...
