I love this mixture of Visual Novels and Point&Click/Escape Room games. You play as Gigi, a journalist who covers celebrity news, but her passion lies in crime stories. One day, she heard the news of a serial murderer, which police are still investigating. She became curious and decided to investigate the murders herself to write a story for her readers. Alas, this wasn't as simple as she expected as a fourth woman was murdered, and Gigi received a threatening letter. The choices of this game matter and have enormous consequences. You have relationship points with each major character, affecting how the story goes. There is a manual save that'd save you from repeating some of the parts, especially the QTE which were annoying, if you fail on them you'll be directly going to the main menu. I really wanted to get into this VN, but it reads like it was written by a 15 year old. I don't know if that's just the translation or what, but it is super cringe from beginning to end. The story's relatively boring, too. It just never really picked up speed.

Unfortunately it's hampered by a rather wooden translation. On the bright side, the low price point makes this one much easier to recommend. As far as the visual novel genre goes, Rainy Butcher has everything you'd expect from a professionally made game. You have the ability to skip lines you've already seen, and there's a healthy amount of save slots, for those of you who dislike being tied to a single save for a playthrough. There's a constant soundtrack of music going on in any scene, and it's serviceable. That being said, it's very generic. There's not really a good track, but none are particularly weak. The game is fully voiced, but only in Cantonese (Chinese). That leads us to the first real stumbling block for the game: the translation. It's competent enough, but they're obviously literally translating things. Overall this is a quite decent mystery visual novel with point&click gameplay! The story itself isn't unique and had several predictable moments but I still found it quite intriguing and fun for having that nostalgic, classic detective-thriller plot. I especially enjoyed that there are choices that actually result in different endings! Also the side stories are pretty fun. Additionally the protagonist is very entertaining, together with most side characters. The general gameplay is quite nice too, mainly the investigations are interesting and not too difficult. However I greatly recommend to frequently save the game-progress, since there are multiple quick-time events that might immediately lead to a dead end! Otherwise the game has pretty art, great voice-acting and good music, which could profit from more variety though. Altogether I'd say that this game doesn't necessarily offer anything new, since it mainly explores already existing concepts without going into much detail, however I still certainly enjoyed it and found myself entertained most of the time! I believe it's worth a try for those into that kind of games.
