About RB: Axolotl

Taking place in a tank suspended upon a cosmic wonderland, five axolotls appear one day from a mysterious, thundering void. They quickly learn they are able to speak with one another, and relationships are formed. However, something is off. Each axolotl seems to possess knowledge they should not know. Foods, and people, and places and concepts...

And obsessions.

Amid conspiracies, illnesses, fights to the death, VR headsets, and bizarre reality switching, a figure named \ seems to be pulling the strings behind it all.

✦ AI summary

This visual novel surprises players with its deceptively dark and emotionally heavy story beneath its cute aesthetic, featuring strong character development and meaningful twists that encourage reflection on life and mental health. Players consistently praise the well-crafted narrative, thoughtful writing, and how the game builds to a satisfying conclusion, though they emphasize it requires patience and warn that the brutal and depressing content may be overwhelming for vulnerable players. The mismatch between the game's cute, colorful presentation and its mature, sometimes horrific themes is

Such a wonderful VN! Certainly wasn't expecting it to immediately start taking things seriously! It was such a slap to the face, although I'm sure Enc would've liked that! There were many twists and turns, and the overall story was a pleasant surprise. It certainly got me thinking and made me evaluate my life!

This game is a real masterpiece of literature, slow paced with a very deep and interesting story about pain and mental health issues. The graphics are cute and colorful. If you are struggeling with life the axolotls can teach you how much hobbies can improve your quality of life (while at the same time the story migh also be a bit heavy for you if you are struggeling) I had the game running for a whole day to enjoy tiny bits of the story throughout the day, which may not have been the best idea, maybe take it slow, but the story really is worth it. It contains no dirty jokes und would count as family-friendly if it was not for the rather brutal and depressing parts.

RB: Axolotl is a fascinating game. Throughout nearly all of the story, I had no idea where it was going to go next, but it always built on what it had been establishing and hinting at. The characters were fascinating, with struggles that were interesting, and that built into a wider narrative, and the wider narrative was also very strong. The story also feels very heartfelt, in a way I always love to see in games. I will note, the game really isn't kidding when it says that it's intended for mature audiences, as there are both some very horror scenes in the game, and some scenes that have painful (but very well done) depictions of relatively realistic suffering. I do find it a bit funny that people have been giving it the "Choose Your Own Adventure" tag on Steam, seeing as this is largely a kinetic novel (in other words, it is not a game where the player alters the narrative in a meaningful way), but such is life. Lastly, the art and music worked well with the game, helping to give it a strong identity and make the scenes feel stronger. All around an excellent game, and one I can strongly recommend to those looking for a really good kinetic novel. I hope to eventually see a foll…

Cute and kinda demented. I did not expect the layers that the story line has and I very much enjoyed that. The way everything fits together in the end is great. I wont say much more about the story because I don't want to give anything away but it is not what you would think by looking at it. The achievements were the sprinkles on top of the creepy icing on this well thought out cake.
