Players appreciate Red October's unique Soviet Cold War setting and atmospheric sound design, but feel the game suffers from being an overly slow walking simulator with unskippable sequences and fetch quests that prioritize narrative and ambiance over meaningful gameplay. While the premise has genuine historical interest and the environmental details are well-crafted, the pacing issues and lack of engaging mechanics frustrate those expecting more than a passive experience.
There is something here. There is a story to be told, a city and setting to explore. But this game is severely lacking....everything. Pros: - a unique setting and premise: I'm a huge history buff, and went to school for Eastern European history specifically. I'm Russian, and often find myself playing any and all games set in the Soviet Union or Russia. There is potential to the story here--a simulator game in a Closed City sounds amazing. - detailed SFX: There is actually a lot of small details to the sound effects in the game that I found charming. Developed and published by Stop-TussiN, the game situates players in the shadowy world of Cold War scientific ambition, where ideology, secrecy, and personal conscience collide. Rather than offering action-heavy sequences or mechanical complexity, Red October asks players to inhabit a role, absorb a setting, and wrestle with the consequences of their choices in a tightly controlled environment shaped by paranoia and power. You step into the role of Dmitry Sokolov, a young and promising nuclear physicist recruited into Project Red October, a classified Soviet initiative centered on cold fusion research. The project is housed in Oktyabrsk-21, a closed city whose very existence is defined by secrecy and isolation. From the moment you arrive, the setting establishes an oppressive but fascinating tone. Everyday life feels monitored, conversations feel guarded, and even routine scientific work carries political weight. The narrative unfolds gradually, allowing tension to build organically as you learn that the project’s scientifi…2 found this helpful
