I've played and enjoyed this game when it was first released. However this time I had a much more immersive experience after reading The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux before playing it again. The game makes several references to the book, but don't expect a faithful adaptation - it is more of a (very enjoyable) story set in the same universe, using its characters. Since I really like the book, I feel the game could be a little bit longer, but is quite enjoyable and worth playing.

usually i don't finish story games because im too lazy or get bored, but The Phantom of the Opera was my favourite everything (book, musical, game, comic...) a while ago and this its simply so relaxing to play. puzzles, beautiful pixel art and finally not a dumb Christine Daaé

So one of my obsessions is bad musicals. I'm really fascinated by musical theater in general, as song and dance are things I am very very bad at and as such enjoy very much when people are good at it. But I also love musicals as language and the wordsmithery of a Sondheim, for example, is very appealing to me. But lowbrow musicals are also fun. I just like them! In fact, musical theory youtube makes up the bulk of my video essay consumption, and one of my favorites is Lindsay Ellis' video about Love Never Dies, the insane sequel to Phantom of the Opera. I have both watched Love Never Dies AND read the equally insane book The Phantom of Manhattan that Andrew Lloyd Webber commissioned, and they are some of the most entertaining pieces of bad media I've ever consumed; I highly recommend both. So when I found out there was a 1993 DOS game called "Return of the Phantom" that was also a detective game I was very excited. Either it was good fanfic and thus entertaining, or bad fanfic and thus entertaining, and possibly it would be REALLY bad fanfic and it would join its brethren in the Bad Media Hall of Fame. I became a fan of Phantom of the Opera in 2004 when the movie came out. To say I was obsessed is an understatement. A friend found a copy of this game at a thrift store and gave it to me, but I had no way to play it. I've kept it all these years, even if it did sit in my closet while I eventually moved on to other interests and forgot about it. It was complete happenstance that I recently found the game on Steam. I genuinely loved this game. It was charming, funny, engaging, and offered a strange sense of nostalgia for a game I hadn't played but already loved just by virtue of it being a Phantom of the Opera game. I'm so happy that I finally got to experience Return of the Phantom after all these years!!!
