If there was ever a game that perfectly demonstrated how to build a masterpiece and then completely destroy it, it is Ring of Elysium. Writing this review is honestly just sad because this game used to be the ultimate Battle Royale experience. Back in 2018, during the Mt. Dione era, this game was incredible. It was a fresh, optimized alternative to other clunky battle royales on the market. The mechanics were unique and incredibly fun: spawning into a massive snow map, snowboarding down mountains, using climbing gear, and frantically fighting for the last four seats on a rescue helicopter while a deadly winter storm closed in. It was atmospheric, tactical, and extremely engaging. But then, the developers made some of the worst decisions in gaming history, which is exactly what the entire community still complains about today. They removed the beloved snow map and forced everyone onto a much more generic island map. They started adding ridiculous, unbalanced tactical gadgets, ignored community feedback, and completely lost the identity of what made the game special in the first place. Ring of Elysium was the battle royale equivalent of bringing a homemade cake to a party where everyone was already eating Fortnite. Snowboards. Hang gliders. Climbing gear. A helicopter extraction ending. Actual innovation. At a time when everyone else was busy asking, "How many skins can we sell?", Ring of Elysium was trying to make traversal fun. And honestly? It worked. Movement felt fresh, firefights were satisfying and the final helicopter extraction gave matches a tension most battle royales still struggle to replicate. Unfortunately, gaming history is littered with good ideas arriving at exactly the wrong time. Competing against PUBG, Fortnite and Apex Legends was basically showing up to a heavyweight boxing match armed with enthusiasm. Ring of Elysium deserved more players. It deserved more updates. It deserved better. Instead, it became another entry in the long list of games people remember by saying: "Damn, that was actually pretty good."
