What a letdown. Sephonie is a weird mix of 3D platformer and puzzle game, following a team of three international scientists on their mission to explore a mysterious uncharted island. While this game's style and premise are unique and the dreamlike atmosphere and bizarre level design nicely complement each other, the execution is so damn clunky it's just not fun to play. First problem: the gameplay. This game wants you to do some freaky parkour, but controls during the platforming sections feel frustratingly sluggish, imprecise and inconsistent. Every now and then, you'll link with the islands native species via a trivially easy tetromino puzzle. The combination of the two feels a bit like chessboxing: mostly done for the novelty and unlikely to deliver a top performance in either sport. Second problem: the story: It's disjointed, badly edited and there's just too much of it. In addition to the actual happenings of the game, there's a strange narrator's backdrop and a plethora of wordy and inconsequential flashbacks to the three protagonists respective childhoods. The ending also throws you for an unneeded (and ultimately pointless) loop. I can respect Sephonie as the ambitious…4 found this helpful
Emotionally dense and artistic. It's also pretty fun when it works. Could do with some tweaks... but I'm not really here for the most well crafted platforming experience so much as I am the narrative, atmosphere, and presentation... though there's also a nice little puzzle game that you come across throughout the experience. Excellent music too. I won't forget you, Sephonie.
Sephonie has solid platforming and a very well crafted world. It's environments make full use of it's platforming mechanics. The controls will likely seem clunky to a lot of people, but I personally had a lot of fun with it. The Puzzles are okay. I enjoyed them, even though they weren't very difficult at all. It offered a welcome break from the platforming I suppose? The game does a great job at building up your skills and tests you adequately in the final area. The games areas look and sound fantastic. The narrative while interesting, feels overwhelming, especially early into the game. While the way it's framed is certainly unorthodox, once I came to better understand it I was hooked and left feeling very connected to the games protagonists. Although I'm still unsure how to feel about the post-game epilogue. Despite this uncertainty, the game will definitely stick with me for how it immerses you into its world with both its gameplay and narrative.
i had a lot of fun going for 100%! Always love when games hide collectables in out of bounds areas.
If you're a fan of their other games, yes, but the parkour is a bit wonky.
Unique gameplay that kind of feels like a blend of cinematic platformer with something more traditional. The world and story are exceptional standouts and just being in the world of Sephonie is a delight. Vibes are off the charts, must play for platformer or surreal game fans
