About SGS Winter War
Winter War is the recreation of the war that opposed Finland and the Soviet Union between November 1939 and March 1940The game lasts 16 turns, each representing one week between December 1939 and March 1940. One player represents the tiny Republic of Finland, the other has the Soviet Union land and air forces.
- The Soviets have numerous but poorly led and badly organized forces at the start of the game, but their reinforcements are impressive.
- The Finnish must hold desperately against the initial onslaught and vastly superior strength of their enemy, thanks to their superior quality and ideal defensive positions, hoping to gain enough time when threats of Allied Intervention discourages the Russian bear.
Be careful however of the potential weakness in number on the Finns side, as well as the uncertainty of Stalin's resolve on the other...
The game's event cards allow full replay ability thanks to the numerous various situations that they create on the diplomatic, military, political or economical fields.

Not my favorite SGS game. It's realistic, I guess. If you like pain, this is the game for you LOL. As Soviet, you throw your units into a meat grinder. As Finns, you watch your army bleed to death. Maybe I'm missing the nuances of this campaign... Technically, graphically, it's a great game. I'm just not as fond of the campaign as I thought I would be.6 found this helpful
Historically unaccurate
I have always been fascinated by this war within a war as politically and militarily many possibilities existed at the time. In retrospect, we only remember that Finland joined with the Axis powers. This game adds the intrigue as if the Western Allies might decide to support Finland in its war with the Soviet Union. This is not the only aspect of the game I enjoy. It portrays well the challenge of better troops against better numbers and offers the player ways to embrace historical play as well as make historical and the player's own errors. But still, what if the Allies added to their over-commitments by coming to Finland's aid. It is a rare event, but the possibility is another exciting element.

I have no words, than I enjoy this historical game story.
