Shadows Over Loathing

i regret buying this ♥♥♥♥ because the creator is an abuser and rape apologist and the game pales in comparison to the original.

I can't put my finger on it, but while mechanically the game is slightly better than west of loathing, and has some good moments (like university), most of it is boring, absolutely unlike WoL. I think it ultimately is due to the writing, or maybe it's just that once you played from WoL the developers were unable to think of anything significantly new. The classes also suck and are super alike. I played this game a few years ago and can barely remember a thing, which is a bad sign.

I think this game is good. Is it as good as West of Loathing? Well, that comes down to a couple of factors. The general gameplay is the same. The battle system feels a bit more fleshed out, and it gave me more of a challenge, but that's not saying much. The puzzles feel longer to me. The story is much stronger than West's was. You're trying to find your Uncle Murray the whole time, while exorcising curses. The game wants to have cosmic horror elements, but in my opinion it doesn't really do very well at that. The humor is a lot less punchy than in West. The general sense of humor is the same, and if West made you laugh, Shadows will at least make you chuckle. But it's slower to get to the punchlines, and there's in general a lot less jokes. I think that's the main factor that made this worse than West to me, because West constantly had me cracking up. The final aspect is the structure of the game. West let you do pretty much whatever you wanted, and it only had two maps, where in the second one, you vaguely had to do the main quest, but it very seamlessly got you to do sidequests as well. I didn't know what I am signing up for with this one. There is a LOT of reading. And then I really liked the game. I think it is a bit longer than I would have liked but I did a lot of side questing.
