Waste of time. My friend bought me this game and I feel bad for him. Honestly don't even get it on sale. Just wondered around without nothing happening and no clear objective.
While I appreciate the atmosphere and use of darkness to drive it, I might as well be blind for half of this mess. Playing in a dark room, at night, and I still can't see sh*t. The lighting imperfections on my TV are brighter than the features of this game in the dark hallways where you have to navigate. And no brightness/gamma settings. Could be a good game, but not like this.
SKUF BACKROOMS is a psychological horror experience that fully embraces the unsettling nature of liminal spaces and internet-inspired surreal horror. Developed and published by akhsotoen, the game places players inside an endless maze of abandoned apartments, dim hallways, stairwells, and distorted environments heavily inspired by Backrooms mythology but filtered through a bleak post-Soviet aesthetic. Rather than relying entirely on cheap jump scares or constant action, the game focuses on isolation, confusion, and the oppressive feeling of wandering through spaces that seem disconnected from reality itself. The result is an indie horror title that feels rough in certain areas but succeeds at creating a strange and memorable atmosphere that lingers long after the game ends. The basic premise is intentionally mysterious. Players explore a labyrinth of decaying environments while being stalked by a terrifying entity known as Skuf, a former human who supposedly lost his mind after becoming trapped inside these endless transitional spaces. The game slowly feeds players fragments of information through environmental details and scattered clues, but much of the horror comes from uncerta…
Positive: 👻 SKUF BACKROOMS delivers a strong Backrooms atmosphere with endless corridors, eerie lighting, and constant tension while exploring deeper into the maze. The sound design does a great job making the experience immersive and unsettling. Negative: 🔄 The gameplay is very simple and the experience is quite short, with little variety beyond exploration and avoiding danger. 🏆 Completionists & Achievement Hunters: There are 3 Steam achievements, all tied to simple progression and exploration. ⏱️ Full completion can be done very quickly in one short session. Overall: SKUF BACKROOMS is a short but effective atmospheric horror experience. It doesn’t offer deep mechanics or long playtime, but for a quick creepy adventure — especially at a low price — it does its job well and is worth checking out.
Interesting take on the Backrooms. Very Liminal and Desolate. Hopeless and Forgotten. I think it was a wee bit short and probably could use a SAVE or checkpoint system. But the Level design is detailed so well, the audio cues and fantastic (creaking doors, or when you step on a garbage bag). I think there is potential to not only expand this game, but also really improve it as it is with a simple saving system. Graphics are top notch, audio is fantastic, and the gameplay is easy, fluid, and straightforward. Good creepy game to play in the dark, by yourself, with the volume cranked.
Not as bad as I expected, but not as good as it could be. The first section of the game is the best, only being able to open doors by pushing into them gives the anxious feeling that you're blindly pushing into danger, like the old resident evil loading screens, but after finishing that section of the most linear maze, your're sent off a new balancing maze that just barely more confusing than the first. You are then presented with the worst and most boring maze I have ever dealt with in a video game, it's an extremely long and unforgiving maze that you are expected to do in one run. Wherein, the run you are expected to not make a single mistake, even if quickly corrected, will likely lead to your death at the hand of some tall bald dude making the brainrot sound of that one dude snoring. Other than the game play, the set design isn't the worst in my opinion. The settings of a soviet bloc backrooms is something I haven't seen before, and it was fairly well done, tons of trash and rats everywhere, metal doors lining hallways, and dim lights really made the atmosphere for this game work better than I expected. I also want to make note that the first "jumscare" of the game didn't wor…
