SLACKJAW whispers from the damp concrete like a half-remembered nightmare, where games cease to be mere diversion and become existential traps. As the latest offering from a lone artisan channeling the grim poetry of true-crime podcasts, it drags you into the basement of a predator whose smile never reaches his eyes. Here, survival is not power fantasy but quiet desperation—every creak upstairs a memento mori, every scavenged tool a fragile rebuttal to entropy. In its brief hour of shadowed existence, SLACKJAW masters the art of tension through restraint: hyper-realistic UE5 decay that feels oppressively lived-in, logical yet panic-inducing puzzles born from the mundane horrors of captivity, and a haunting soundtrack that lingers like the echo of footsteps you pray are not descending. It understands horror as philosophy—how the ordinary becomes profane when stripped of agency, how silence itself is a loaded gun.
Pros:
Great sound and atmosphere. Nice creepy vibe, perfect for a horror themed game. Level design is well done. Items in the environment serve a purpose and help to move the story along. Cheap. I got the game at full price of $6.99 and at the time of posting this there is currently a 40% off sale making it $4.19.
Cons:
Maddeningly short. I beat the game in like 20 mins and then spent around 30 more mins getting the rest of the achievements. No save system. Which is by design as you’re meant to playthrough in a single session. Low effort puzzles. All of the puzzles were simple and provided no real challenge. Low stakes. If you make enough noise you get caught, but as the game is super short this is not a real setback, especially with the aforementioned simple puzzles.
Overall:
Still a good buy for anyone looking for a quick little hidden horror gem at a reasonable price point. I look forward to seeing what else this developer can do. Amazing work especially as their first ever game.
