Slay or Fall

Slay or Fall is a thoughtfully constructed indie strategy game that places narrative choice and long-term consequence at the center of its design. Developed by ostsergey and published by Ostsergey Games, the game flips a familiar fantasy trope by casting the player not as a wandering hero, but as the Dark Lord presiding over a vast dungeon under constant threat. Rather than relying on visuals or action-heavy mechanics, Slay or Fall builds tension through text, systems, and decisions that steadily accumulate weight as each run progresses. Something just satisfying about being the ruler some cheesy "Heroes" are trying to dislodge.

This is mostly a text based game with some minor stratagy battle sequences. I have never been so compelled to read text in a game as I have with this one. Its a fun relaxing game and reverses roles for your classic D&D set up. For what it is, 10/10 for me

To me it feels like a visual novel with "choice matters" moments. The story and the events are fun if static; each event is the same each time, influenced by your choices, faction relationship, hero type/traits; so while the same, there is variability in the outcomes. The autobattle component is the weakest aspect of the game, with little varity in battle maps and very simple unit pathing/attack simply selecting the closest target, lead to a degree of annoyance. But is one of the main limitation of autobattle engagements. Being able to set your Overlord preset provides a different story arc, weighting events differently increasing/decreasing occurrence; altering Hero party composition influences event outcomes and susceptibility to certain "rest time" activity. The pixel art is nothing special, though the rest of the pieces within the game are wonderful. For the price of ~$10AUD I have found it worth my time and attention.

The game has a good grasp on what makes choices enjoyable, the results are predictable, they can chain and they can be taken back with another choice. The game gives your choices consequences, with your minions sabotaging you when oppressed. Overall the story choices part of the game is well done. The combat can be janky at times, with your units focusing on the wrong enemy, I'd be nice to see different priorities between units. But you're not supposed to win every fight, just damage the enemy. It's a simple system that only supports another part of the game instead of having its own depth. The last part of the game is the sabotage you get to do when the enemy rests. This system works well, you need to plan ahead and mechanically all the choices are there, but there's a lot of story opportunity that wasn't captured here. You either torment the heroes or end up bribing them, there's little nuance to it other than the random hero traits that make one of the options more likely. Overall the game is good fun, a little easy to figure out, but the different titles and hero parties change it up a fair bit. Great game if you enjoy playing from the perspective of an evil protagonist, you essentially lay out troops from four separate factions (Goblins, Rat-kin, Lizard-folk, and Cultists + your own skeletons as a lich). Each faction has their own interests and "morals" that you have to either balance to maintain favor, or completely ignore and punish to command fear. There are multiple ways to combat the heroes outside of pure combat, and the story strikes a good balance between fun and grim. My only real complaint is that there isnt any way to direct troops during combat, meaning you have to leave all movement up to the ai which can be mildly frustrating.
