Players praise KOTOR 2's exceptional writing, dialogue, and role-playing depth, particularly when played with the restored content mod, though some note the story takes time to unfold. The main complaints center on the game's aging gameplay mechanics, with clunky combat, poor animations, and frustrating pathfinding that can feel at odds with player intent. Despite these technical shortcomings, the complex narrative and meaningful player choices make it a memorable experience that many consider superior to the original.
As someone who played vanilla KOTOR 2 on xbox, i decided it was time to do a run with the restored content mod, and this GREATLY improves the game, could not go back to play without it. Even without the game still holds up, the dnd combat is perfect, the dialogue is the peak of star wars. 10/101 found this helpful
The start of the game is hard to get into, but once you familiarize yourself with the mechanics (around 10 hours in), the gameplay becomes really fun. So far it's been an exciting story with good characters.
While KOTOR won Game of the Year, KOTOR 2 provides far more role playing possibilities, makes player decisions more consequential, and contains a complex storyline that one can play as either Light or Dark without seeming like a cliche. The Dark Side option sometimes floats too closely to being utterly childish, but its storyline, crafting system, use of skills, and greater dialogue make me wonder how a third installment (that wasn't a poor attempt at an MMPORG) never came about.
[First of all, play with the restored content mod or some equivalent mod collection, but you can skip most of the droid planet restored content, maybe even skip HK-47's factory thing. They aren't quite 'restored enough'/still missing content/polish, and don't really hold up to the vibe and standards of the rest of the game.] If you're going to play this game, do a blind playthrough of Kotor 1 as well, the story directly sets the stage for this one though isn't totally necessary to know, but you might as well. But, this one is superior to the first in every way. KOTOR 2 was made back in the era where Obsidian would take other developer's games and make sequels that were better than the originals, and this series predates yet set the stage for the entire Bioware be-good-or-evil cinematic dialog-choice Mass Effect/Dragon Age type of RPG, yet is rarely given credit for being successful enough to kickstart that entire genre of game. The gameplay is basically just Kotor 1's but more fleshed out, it's basically classic DnD with a weird timing/round system all happening in the background, it's good but nothing crazy. Lots of very varied and fun builds to try, game is extremely easy once …

There are games you play because they're fun, and then there are games you play because they're unforgettable. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II – The Sith Lords somehow manages to be both one of the most frustrating RPGs I've ever played and one of the best-written stories I've ever experienced. I'll get the biggest issue out of the way first: the gameplay has aged terribly. The combat is clunky, repetitive, and often feels like it's fighting against you rather than your enemies. Since it's based on D&D-style dice rolls under the hood, attacks can miss for reasons that aren't always obvious, especially early on, making combat feel slow and unsatisfying. Animations are stiff, pathfinding can be questionable, companions have a habit of making strange decisions, and bugs occasionally remind you that this game was rushed out the door before it was truly finished. Even with the Restored Content Mod—which I'd consider essential—there are still moments where the game's age shows. That said, there is one thing that never stopped putting a smile on my face: Force Lightning. Once you've invested enough points into it, it goes from a useful Force power to an absolute room-clearing…
