Simplicity is a Feature
Does this game have as deep tactical combat as X-COM? No! And it doesn't need to! You get just enough options to make things interesting with randomly generated arenas (ship interiors) in which to fight. You can customize your squad, deck them out with better weapons, and make them wear fancy hats. If you catch this game on sale and you JUST want to have fun without needing a Wiki open in another window... without needing to memorize what's BEST IN SLOT or what the optimized builds are... then this is a wonderful game!2 found this helpful
Steamworld Heist was a fun adventure with a lighthearted charm and a fresh twist on the turn-based tactics genre. It started off feeling somewhat plain, but as I recruited new characters and unlocked more abilities, its tactical potential slowly unfolded. It still wasn’t as deep as something like XCOM and the lack of variety lowered its replayability, but the initial playthrough was a satisfying experience. I especially enjoyed the unique implementation of aiming. Manually angling each character’s attacks felt novel yet intuitive, and became extremely gratifying with the addition of ricochet mechanics, laser sights, bombs, and covers. However, I could also see this being frustrating to some, because certain situations required perfectly timed button presses to “lock in” an angle in the middle of a character’s animation. Ricocheting a sniper’s bullet on 2 different walls to get a flanking shot on a covered enemy felt amazing, but it was also devastating to completely botch a turn because my guy couldn’t keep his arm straight for even half a second. The chief annoyance for me was the equipment management. At the end of every mission all I wanted was to jump right back into action …
This game is so good, Gabe Newell made a $1050 SteamWorld Cube so you could play it
It's very fun. I recommend to play.
I thought this was going to be a small fun game to 100% to kill some time before Palworld 1.0, and it was... Until it isn't.
Don't be fooled by the nice casual mobile-ish looking screenshots. this game is anything but casual. 3 Acts with around 15 missions each act, doesn't take too long to finish but already overstayed its welcome near the end because the combat is as shallow as a puddle, missions are so repetitive they just blend into each other; the game doesn't give you enough information to make informed decisions in a TURN-BASED TACTIC game. Angry Birds had better design than this game, freaking Angry Birds. If you want to 100% this game then you better prepare to grind for hats with 2% spawn rate, not only that there are multiple rare hats that can spawn on the same enemy type which make that 2% even lower and not all hats will count for achievements. Hat spawns on specific enemy type so if you want a specific hat, you have to replay the mission with that enemy type but guess what, the game doesn't tell you which enemy spawn in which mission and google doesn't help, information is for nerds amirite? Pretty much every missi…
Addicting game, 100% it and I don't regret it. The gameplay is a bit simplistic but can easily have depth if needed. The different characters are fun to use (albeit there isn't much encouragement to try out new ones, admittingly). The story and dialogue are also great to keep you hooked in. Highly recommend it. Lowest points are probably the high difficulty options being unfair sometimes and some of the achievements being grindy. The Outsider DLC is also really good and worth the price, get it if you can.
