Sunset's Ashes

The story is nice. As far as graphics go, well, there’s a total of 8 still scenes in the entire game, and of course, the text. That’s it. It's a very short narrative, but you must play 3 times to get all the endings (which are pretty much the same, tbh). It takes about 10 minutes for each playthrough, depending on how fast you read or how quickly you click through the dialog in the 2nd and 3rd playthroughs, as most of the dialog is repeated for each play. So, if you’re going for all 3 endings, it will take about 30 minutes or less. Being a free game, I can't complain too much, but I went ahead and purchased the .99 DLC to see what it might add. Also, come to find out, there's one last achievement with the DLC that you would miss if you only played the free game. In other words, you have to buy the DLC to get 100%. As I had come this far and finished three playthroughs, I thought, "What the heck, I might as well go for the 100% achievement score, otherwise, not getting all the achievements would affect my 'Perfect Games' and ‘Average Game Completion’ ratings." Sunset's Ashes is a very short visual novel, but it is one of those games where I think the length actually works in its favour. I play as Alex while she climbs a mountain with Nic, who has never really been comfortable with this kind of trip before. The two of them spend the climb talking about their lives and remembering things from their relationship, so most of the game is about getting to know them rather than doing anything complicated. There is no combat or big gameplay system here. It is mostly reading, making a few choices and watching their relationship unfold. The thing I like most is the atmosphere. The mountain setting gives the whole story a quiet feeling that works really well with the conversations. I am moving through different parts of the climb while Alex and Nic talk about their past, and there is something quite nice about how ordinary their conversations can feel. It does not make them sound like perfect fictional characters who always know exactly what to say. They feel more like two people who have spent a long time together and are trying to make the most of an important day. That makes the quieter moments stand out more when the tone starts changing.
