About Super Galaxy Squadron EX Turbo

✦ AI summary

Pilot one of seventeen unique starfighters in this frantic space shooter where you blast through six stages of alien invaders, tackle brutal bosses, and chase high scores across multiple modes. Super Galaxy Squadron EX Turbo cranks up the original game's action with new mechanics like Overdrive and Focus, a complete visual overhaul, and enough difficulty options to challenge veterans and welcome newcomers alike.

2438. Eleven years after the First Ceti War. The United Interstellar Federation and a secluded alien race from Tau Ceti are locked in a tense stalemate. Seventeen of the best pilots in the Federation have been recruited to single handedly win the inevitable second war.

Super Galaxy Squadron EX Turbo is an expansion/remaster/one-step-from-a-sequel to 2015's Super Galaxy Squadron, and takes the original game's frantic action and modern accessibility to vastly greater heights. New and returning features include:
  • Seventeen ships with unique stats and weapons to suit a variety of playstyles
  • Six stages of classic SHMUP action (and savage bosses) in Arcade Mode
  • An infinite onslaught to satisfy your scoring itch in Endless Mode
  • The supreme timed challenge of Boss Rush Mode
  • A range of difficulty options, from calm and newbie-friendly to basically impossible
  • Fully voiced cutscenes for the two people looking for a good story
  • New mechanics like Overdrive & Focus that help you kill more things and get more points
  • A (nearly) complete graphical overhaul

Feeling nostalgic, or just want to see what's changed? Super Galaxy Squadron EX Turbo includes the original Super Galaxy Squadron, so load up your smaller, slightly less pretty ship for a trip down (two year old) memory lane. Or don't. It's up to you.

EDIT: I was able to get this game into a playable state by closing every other application whenever I ran the game. A little inconvenient but not too bad. Because of this, I have changed the review from negative to positive since the crashes were the only real gripe I had with the game. The original review is still included below. ------------------ This review would be positive, however it is bordering on being unplayable with consistent crashes within 10 minutes of booting the game up. Keep this in mind if you are considering buying this game. It seems that this issue is not universal, so you may end up luckier than me.

Outstanding, super fun, challenging yet forgiving. If you're new to STG this is a perfect fit.

Beautiful pixel art but frankly just quite not up there as a proper shoot em up. the levels meander with no defining features, the bullet patterns feel random and boring, the power ups probably matter for DPS but barely feel different, its best feature is a slowdown mechanic that actually feels like lagging your game down, it feels clunky but in a good way imo. it just lacks a certain je ne sais quois that makes the big boy shoot em ups *really* good, and if you've played any of those will will probably let you down, its still more than fully functional, inoffensive and has variety of ships and modes, so I would not be as harsh as to give it a bad score, but its honestly quite hard to recommend even for beginners of the genre, something much better would get you hooked more easily, get zeroranger.
