About Tactics V: "Obsidian Brigade"

Tactics V: "Obsidian Brigade" is a retro-style tactical turn-based video game in homage to console tactical RPGs from the 1990s. Its set in an in-house fantasy setting with it's own lore and magic, It also uses techniques to convert to a 2D isometric look from 3D assets.

The dream behind this game goes with the roman numeral five in its name, which was originally the code name differentiating it from four other tactical game systems the programmer, Paul Metcalf, had made.

Content Included:

• Robust combat system (with many mechanics: facing, targeting styles, actions, delayed actions, reactions)

• World map navigation.

• >50 hand crafted levels

• >80 scripted scenes/battles

• 25+ hours and new game plus

• 14 unique unlockable classes
4.5/10
Decent tactical RPG that's ruined by a terrible charged attack and spell system that's *so* bad even the AI can't use them. Such a shame, because without that one issue, I'd keep the game and give it a 6.5-7/10 easily.
Pros:
- I really like the graphics overall (except for unit visibility in combat). They remind me of games like Pool of Radiance: Ruins of Myth Drannor and others - Seems to run well, and there are battle options like overhead view that help the experience
Mehs:
- Music and sound design are not good. Not *terrible* either, but there's not much to look forward to there. Music is a critical part of tactical RPGs and even if free use music is necessary due to budgetary constraints, there's no excuse for choosing music you wouldn't want to listen to for hours
Cons:
- Biggest issue that ruins the game for me: charged attacks and spells. It's extremely difficult to find out if it'll go off before the target's next turn or not. This should be very visible info. Also... - THE AI LITERALLY CONSTANTLY MISSES SPELLS BECAUSE IT DOESN'T KNOW THE TARGET WILL MOVE BEFORE THEY GO OFF. If it happened once, maybe it's a flu…

One of the most amazing games ever, a true treasure in the genre!

I enjoyed it. Combat allows for fun builds and strategies, without relying too much on a specific "meta" build. Grinding is available, but not really that necessary. Late game enemies seem to be untouchable by either melee or magic, so having a variety becomes essential. Story is serviceable. Could have used some QoL updates- way too many loading screens, some things aren't very intuitive (I never did figure out exactly how hit chance is determined), and the mount system is neat on paper but in practice implemented poorly, as anyone required by a story battle seems to lose the mount automatically. Also, I found it challenging to determine if LoS was blocked, even with the ranged trajectory skill. I enjoyed it overall. Didn't outstay its welcome. Finished in ~16 hours.

I'm finding it difficult to get into this game. It looks worse than the 90's games it pays homage too running on a modern emulator, owing to a rendering resolution that is much too low. This is made all the worst by maps that are too busy. It fails to utilize any of lessons learned in UIX in the 30 years since the 90s. On the other hand, the music is great and the sound effects are appropriate. I recommend giving it a try--as my complains are subjective.

Eh a FF Tactics ripoff. Good enough to scratch that itch

good game actually its a hidden gem among tactic rpg games. the story mode is actually descent paled to most other games it plays identical to "FFT" final fantasy tactics its actually kinda generic could add more jobs and skills but i like how it actually makes a unit into a killing machine if you build them right. oh yea developers this game could really use mods to make less generic and more "unique" content in game and to better some physical features of characters such as the eyes....
