鸿源战纪 - Tales of Hongyuan

I know in our modern sensitivities, people get uptight over stupid things like broad observations, even if those observations tend to be true. Well, I'm old so I speak my mind and really don't care. And I am going to make a broad observation here. The Chinese TRULY understand what it means to tell a story of epic, good vrs evil classical fantasy stories. From the highly embellished and romanticized "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" novels, to "The journey of the Flower" or "The Chinese Paladin" stories, to some of the great video game saga's such as The Legend of the Journey West" or "Wu Xia" (the series) when you let yourself invest in their fantasy worlds, you see a romanticized, inspiring work that used to be something we had in the west, before they were replaced with flashy spectacle and visuals over substance led by corporate mediocrity. This sense of wonder and magic, this line between good and evil, they really understand it well and they always have. And so I think its a damned shame so few of their works make it into the English speaking world. Tales of Hongyuan is a great example of this. I loved it, this game have a lot of things that i really wish more games implemented, like a quick sell option and auto battle, there's also a house system where you can upgrade your house to unlock cool stuff (You can see "Home" by pressing Esc to open the menu), there are very useful upgrades showing enemies / chests in the mini map and refine your weapons, and many other useful buffs that will help you a LOT in battles. The story is fine and the characters are nice, the combat is very challenging and you will have a hard time if you don't equip yourself well, you should follow the walkthrough the game gives you and try to do all sidequests you can because you can get some very good and unique equipment in these, there's even a sidequest that gives you an accessory that increases your movement speed in the map by 50%, the name is 'Face to the past'. Pro tip, if you're playing in window mode and want to alt+tab while having your team in auto battle, you can click on the window of the game instead of alt+tab and your game won't pause. Fun, easy to digest turn-based battle game. The translations are a bit weird sometimes, but it's nothing that can't be figured out with a bit of context. Otherwise, it's nice because nothing seems overly complicated while still requiring some strategy during the fights, which means I don't have to worry about my brain rotting... Anyways cool game very underrated as most CRPGs are on here lol

If I had to compare this game to any western game, it would probably have to be the first Baldurs Gate. Which may be too high praise, but nonetheless... Still, it isn't a straight comparison, because the two games have quite a few differences. For example, there isn't a list of classes to pick for your character, no diverging skill trees to fill out for the PC or the rest of the party. And the list of companions in this game is, unlike that game, fixed, which is also unlike many games in the same genre which offers several characters you can recruit and/or romance. I would also compare this a bit to Pillars of Eternity, if only because you get a base in the game with something akin to the Endless Paths of Od Nua that game had as well. And of course, said base can be upgraded and whatnot. It's a wuxia or at least wuxia-like game that offers plenty of quests to solve, monsters to fight, secrets to find and so on. If that kind of thing is your thing, and you don't mind that the game is linear save for the outcome of a few quests, this is a game that you should find enjoyable.
