The Blogger: Pumpkins and Witches

"The Blogger: Pumpkins and Witches" is a handheld (Nintendo Switch)/console game that's also been put on Steam as a bit of an afterthought, as it's very much designed for the handheld/console gaming audience. I am aware it took some time for Nintendo to approve this, presumably due to the general low quality and concerns around indemnification due to the blatant ripoff of Tim Burtons general art and character design. Yes, it is wrong to take other people's intellectual property, change it around slightly and slap your own name on it. Anyway, creative and moral bankruptcy aside, this is a poorly made VN heavy third person adventure game where you wander around a spooky environment, take photos, and avoid the evil priest or whatever. There's almost no polish here, it seems no playtesting was done.. movement is like wading through molasses. Any playtesting at all would reveal that it's unpleasant to play right off the bat. The writing, gameplay and other aspects of the game continue that trend, unfortunately. A VERY rare do not recommend. I normally like looking on the positive side to games in general but I just can't for this one. The game is incredibly clunky, movement feels incredibly slow for the map size and I felt like there was just a major lack of direction. I'm really hoping for a more positive experience on the next game I play by this developer because I'm incredibly passionate about indie games and really hope their future games really bring their passion out to us players. 4/10 would not get lost in this village again.

I have mixed feelings about The Blogger: Pumpkins and Witches. At its core it’s a free roam puzzle game where you wander around and try to make sense of your environment. But It’s way too goofy, light hearted, and slow moving to ever really feel scary. I think that almost works to the game’s advantage though. When you are running in circles hoping to stumble upon anything to help you it’s wild to see a random zombie Rudolph, a crucified Santa Claus, or a giant troll that turns to stone. None of things seem to have a use to the story being told, but yet they all exist in this tiny abandoned village. The area where I think where improvement can be made is the game lacks direction. I don’t necessarily think The Blogger is difficult. However, I do think there is room for NPCs to provide some sort of hint on what you should be doing or even some added exposition so the game doesn’t feel like you aren’t just meandering around hoping you are finding the right items. I ended up discovering the game’s ending by complete accident while I was trying to figure out what I still needed to do with the remaining items in my inventory. And it felt like a pretty fitting end to the game all things …

I played this for almost 3 hours giving it the benefit of the doubt. What I enjoyed - I loved the art style, a mix of salad fingers & nightmare before Christmas vibes. 2. Once I figured out the puzzles, I was enjoying it. what I didn't like - Playing for almost 3 hours and at the last puzzle, during the puzzle, I was killed and had to start from the beginning. This is where I gave up. I was have loved a check point or to be able to save. I would also love not to die during a puzzle. 2nd, The walking was very slow to get around in such a big area. I hope this helps and hopefully improves.

Playing and reviewing the game was a request by the developer. I really loved the art here, it is unique and to me it’s actually the hook of the game, which is great of course. For now, the gameplay is good. The back story is interesting that there are 2 characters are going to abandoned places and take photos. But this version can be considered a mid-stage of the game. Please don't take this as a bad thing, keep working on it, consider the feedback as QA for you. Please know that I am also an indie developer, and I would like to give some feedback, which I hope it will be helpful for you. 1- It is important to have a clarity about the UI screens, especially the controls, just a simple UI screen showing the controls. 2- Also, I was unable to navigate in the (B) menu, and I had no idea what was this menu for, is it like tasks or map somehow, is it inventory or photo album. So, make separate UI screens if needed 3- The map was difficult to memories, so it is actually very important to have a map. just simple one would do. 4- There must be story progression, you can read about this. And by adding letters, books about different people stories, reveling slowly what had happened here…
