The Crimson Call

The art is definitely the main highlight, complemented by an incredible soundtrack that adds a mystical air. I was fully immersed in the story too, but the cryptic ending left me more confused than satisfied.

The Crimson Call is a strange little story driven adventure that I ended up enjoying more than I expected. It takes place after an apocalypse has left civilization broken down into small surviving communities, and I follow Behich and his friend Yerchi as they travel across this damaged world searching for something called The Great Appearance. I liked the mysterious setup because the game does not immediately explain what this strange presence really is, which made me curious about where the journey was going. The story is easily the main focus here. Behich and Yerchi meet other survivors along the way and hear their stories, while the strange force they are searching for continues to sit in the background. I found the writing more interesting when it focused on the people living in this ruined world rather than simply trying to explain the bigger mystery. There are some darker and more depressing themes throughout, which fit the setting quite well. The choices are also important even though this is not a huge branching adventure. I get to make decisions during conversations and certain situations, and those choices can affect how much content I see. There is only one overall end…

As a visual/interactive novel, this doesn't feature any notable gameplay, it's just a lot of clicking through badly written dialogue that would never have been accepted or published in print, which poses the question, "How did something this badly written end up on Steam?". When someone hoping to become an author is unable to get published in print, they spend $100 and dump their high school fan-fiction onto Steam, under the guise of a game. This is an extremely badly written e-book with a high school sci-fi club dropout fan-fiction about a quest to find "The Great Appearance" of AI Slop, I guess. I say that because this CYOA was more an experiment to see how much money the "author" could get paid for dumping a bunch of AI slop imagery on a godawful fanfiction on Steam. This is an amazing game, full of personality, rich in story, and featuring a lot of cool illustrations. I would like it if, in the future, you could choose more storylines, and if there were a way to know what the symbols mean. It would also be nice if there were a sequel where you could play the game in a 2D pixel style or a 3D sandbox.
