The Call of Darkness is one of those adult visual novels that immediately stands out because it actually has personality. The sci-fi setting, the Lovecraftian undertones, the darker atmosphere, and the branching story give it a lot more identity than the average NSFW release. It is built around a war veteran turned starship captain dealing with mystery, romance, and cosmic horror, and that mix works surprisingly well. What I liked most is that the cast feels genuinely varied. The characters are not just there to fill routes or scenes. They feel different from each other, interesting in their own ways, and that makes the whole experience much more fun. For me, that is one of the game’s biggest strengths. It keeps things engaging because you actually want to see more of these people instead of feeling like you are reading slightly altered versions of the same character again and again. My main criticism is that it feels too short for how much potential it has. I had a really good time with it, but it ended so quickly that it almost feels like this should have launched as Early Access instead of dropping a full season this fast while still being this compact.
