About The Excavation of Hob's Barrow

✦ AI summary

Uncover the dark secrets buried beneath an English barrow as archaeologist Thomasina Bateman unravels folk horror mysteries through point-and-click puzzle-solving and unsettling dreams. Blend historical excavation with atmospheric storytelling, a cast of suspicious locals, and evocative pixel-art visuals grounded in genuine English folklore.

Antiquarian Thomasina Bateman is writing a book on the barrows of England, documenting the treasures she finds buried within. When an intriguing letter summons her to the small village of Bewlay, tucked away in the remote countryside, she sets off by train with her assistant a day behind.

Upon her arrival, however, the mysterious man who summoned her is nowhere to be found. Her assistant never arrives. A stubborn landowner refuses access to the barrow, and the locals are wary of this woman who is traveling alone and (gasp!) wears trousers.

The excavation of Hob’s Barrow is off to a rocky start. And then Thomasina starts having strange dreams…
 • A dark, complex and evolving storyline featuring interwoven elements from real English folklore.
 • Traditional point and click adventure game puzzles and interactions, with an easy modern interface.
 • A cast of intriguing characters, from suspicious villagers to sickly vicars to lordly landowners, all with their own unique stories and motives.
 • A distinct folk horror tone and grounding.
 • Evocative pixel-art graphics, featuring cut-scenes and engaging animations.
 • A suitably atmospheric original soundtrack from The Machine. The Demon. - one half of the duo behind the award-winning "Football Game" soundtrack.
 • Fiends in the furrows, the smell of damp soil, and a cat or two.

Solid game up until the final part, where everything falls aparts in the worst way possible. HEAVY SPOILER ON THE ENDING AHEAD, DON'T READ IF YOU PLAN TO PLAY THIS GAME.
Essentially it's pretty obvious to everyone and from the creepy visions and the need for our blood that we are about to unleash some demonic entity, and yet our character goes full r**ard and does exactly that, then writing an idiotic letter to her mother where she justify herself explaining all the tragedy that follow wasn't her, but the thing that possessed her. ...WELL, MAYBE IF YOU DON'T GO AND UNLEASH A DEMON! Have you though about that?... During the final part of the game this character goes from the smart and resourceful Kate Walker from Syberia, to a dimwit from some trash horror movie, and the worst part is we are forced to watch this idiocy unfold without any control over it...
Play it only if you can enjoy the ride up that point and don't care much for the end.

Really stellar feel to this game, some of the best voice acting in a point and click adventure. My only question is when is their next game coming out?
