I love the expanse. I've read the books probably 10 times, watched the show multiple times. I'm a huge fan of Drummer and the actress who portrays her. But I cannot recommend this game. This is my first time playing a Telltale game, so maybe this style just isn't for me. I found it incredibly dull. The 10ish hours I put it were very slow and I could not find a reason to keep playing. Perhaps it gets better, but I can't be bothered to find out.
For any fans of The Expanse, books or TV series, especially fans of Drummer from the TV serie, this game is for you. The story is well written, the plot is interesting, characters feel well build and overall, it truly respect the license. In term of gameplay, its a typical telltales game with lighter gameplay & QTE but this one has a little cooler aspect provided by the fact you float in space most time. In any case, its a fun little story driven game.
I liked this a lot but it's chiefly because I've watched the entire show and read all the books + the novellas. I just love the series so much it was hard not to enjoy more Expanse in any form. But with that being said I didn't love how they don't let you side with the bad guy. My choices felt like they didn't matter much sometimes. Also, for $25, there's barely any playtime. I finished the entire game in 7 hours. I'd recommend it IF you like the Expanse, but I wouldn't if you weren't a big fan.
TL;DR - 7/10 - Good Telltale game, but players who are already fans of "The Expanse" will probably get more out of it than non-fans. Non-fans might get bored with the gameplay as there is a lot of scavenger hunting on derelict space ships. And now some additional thoughts... TELLTALE RETURNS UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT This is the first new game released under the Telltale Games label after the original company shut down. I was curious to see how the brand would do under new management, and it didn't hurt that they released a game set in a universe that I very much enjoy. So I gave it a shot, and it was pretty good. Not one of the best Telltale Games ever released (The Wolf Among Us, Tales From the Borderlands 1, and The Walking Dead are my gold standards), but still a decent outing comparable with some of the original company's decent titles. IT HELPS IF YOU ALREADY LIKE "THE EXPANSE" Admittedly, the gameplay itself is pretty shallow. It is a combination of dialogue choices, walking simulators, quick action prompts, and derelict spacecraft exploration/scavenger hunts. That said, the Telltale brand has always marketed itself on storytelling over gameplay, and the gameplay is no…
I like it. Feels like 3 episodes of last 3 seasons of the show - a bit slower, but still good enough for the fans of Expanse universe. 7/10.
Well, that whiled away a few fun hours even though I don't know the Expanse background. The only problem was that every time Chrisjen Avarasala opened her mouth, all I heard was Admiral Ra'an from Mass Effect... oops.
