Our story begins with Minato arriving in the small town of Kagami, an exceptionally ordinary sort of place in a sleepy suburb of Tokyo.

But there's more to this simple trip than meets the eye. Minato has a secret objective: he intends to find his missing father, who is supposedly living somewhere in the area.
Our young sleuth Minato wastes no time getting started, and soon finds a puzzling clue to his father's whereabouts. A mysterious notebook left for him with the portentous title "The Seven Mysteries."

With this notebook as his guide, Minato sets out on a long and difficult journey, not through space, but through time. For his destination is none other than 33 years in the past—the day his father and mother first met!

The Kids We Were is a simple, medium-length (~9 hours) adventure game with a focus on story. It's a game about children, but - like the title suggests - not made for children, but for those who once were children. And, like the original title suggests (忘れないでおとなになっても。- "Don't forget, even when you become an adult."), it just may remind you of some things you've long forgotten. The main character, Minato (11) goes back in time from 2020 to 1987, where he has to solve some mysteries to change the future - his present. Aside from time-travel, the game is rather realistic, and the problems he encounters are mostly down-to-earth, even if at first they may seem to be of a supernatural... nature. During his adventures he meets people, makes friends, finds more about his parents and - optionally - collects 91 items from the era (all with 3d models and descriptions). At times the game is funny, sometimes emotional, often nostalgic - even if you happen to not have grown up in a 1980s Japan. It also touches a lot of serious subjects that not many games pick up, and it's very subtle about it too. I'm not really a fan of voxel graphics, but The Kids We Were is quite pretty, the music sparse but …

Spectacular. This is an adventure that is warm all around from the sounds of the music and the lighting + artwork. A story that will stick with me above many others.

A game with a sense of nostalgia even if never encountered it before, the rich story makes you immersed almost immediately, I recommend it if you want to set and relax playing a slowly while enjoying the soundtracks

This is a visual novel with a little game thrown in. As long as you are interested in a story-first title, you'll enjoy it. The subject matter is pretty heavy, but it -- and the characters -- are worth the time. Just don't expect an open world that is ripe for exploration.

Today i finished the game and i really enjoyed it beyond my expectations. Gameplay is very simple (running around, collecting things, talking to people) and linear, but the story was really good and well told, with some quite emotional moments. There is some exploration possible, but this isn't a huge open world to explore for many hours. Since a large part of the story takes place in the 80s, the nostalgia factor was also high. You can find some stuff from that time, including short descriptions, and I have to say: My youth in the 80s/90s in Germany wasn't that different from what see in the game, especially stuff like candy etc. Because of the voxel/3d pixel art look, it's probably not a game for everyone, but if you like anime/manga with emotional and nostalgic stories or games like To The Moon or visual novels, this might be a game for you.
