The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak

It's just not good. I have played all of the Trails games up to this point and enjoyed them. Where this falls through is where a lot of modern JRPGs do - trying to do too much with the gameplay mechanics. People like the 'four fellows in a row' turn based battles because it is a simple and elegant game formula, like chess. The Trails games have slowly started adding more and more tack onto this formula to the point battles feel chaotic and convoluted. The menu/UI is basically unreadable too. Top that off with boring characters and dialogue and you have ended up at a point where thr Trails series has totally fallen off. Everyone knows it has gotten steadily worse with each saga since Sky, but I felt Rean's games for all their flaws were still fun. Unfortunately this game is where I part with the series

This is my second gamelife ruining experience, only second to fate samurai remnant. I played three trails game before this one, i liked them even if i could call them JRPG slop, as the quality is pretty average-low. Enjoyable enough. But this is the final stretch to believe many people have the gall to say that this one of the best trails, makes my stomach turn. Combat sucks, it is too easy as you just shot everything by S CRAFT spam(the final move). Story sucks, it mianders for half of the game and restart multiple times, feels like everything achieved is rendered null every chapter. Antagonist sucks even more than usual, dumb as a rock and uses the revive plotlines as a final crutch, really i can't. Music is solid, best part of the game. Performance is horrible honeslty i struggle to see a game that looks as bad as this and runs as bad, cyberpunk, rd2 and other open world i can run at max setting but this struggle to reach 100 fps, they should be ashamed. I frowned for most of the game only saving grace is Shizuna talking down the enemy, like everyone is terrified of this ex soldier, they repeat that he is really powerfull and he even takes a power enhancing drug, she tells to …

i think my playtime speak for itself but genuinly... such a great game, i loved the return to a slighly larger main cast and each setting the game explored, especially the whole story revolving fixing vans personal issues that said, i do think it has one of, if not the weakest main battle theme, it just dosnt fit the vibe of a grey private detective skirting the law all day, its just a bit too upbeat, and sure, its a nice foil to vans issues but you dont always need a foil, here it just comes across as ''van is a brooding lone wolf OH but heres some upbeat battle music!''

Probably the most mixed I've felt about a game in this series so far. Most of the new characters are pretty good, although Agnes might be the most boring party member in the entire series, didn't care for her. The pacing is all over the place, the final chapter in particular was a huge slog to get through. The real time combat is also extremely jank, with some pretty awful hitboxes and others that linger for too long so you dodge and get hit anyway. Still a pretty good game, but a big downgrade from Reverie in just about every way in my opinion.
