STORY & SETTING

In The Occultist, paranormal investigator Alan Rebels travels to the mysterious island of Godstone to determine the cause of the sudden disappearance of his father. Even though he mentioned the island repeatedly over the decades, all that Alan really knows is that his father was born and spent his early years there.

However, Alan does not travel alone. He carries with him his mystical pendulum, an object of unknown origin that accompanied him on all his past paranormal investigations. As he explores the foggy streets and maddening buildings, apparently being the only things that remain on the mysterious island of Godstone, it becomes clear: This will be a case unlike any other.

Godstone was inhabited until 1950 by an infamous, macabre cult that performed disturbing experiments and cruel rituals. No one has ever set foot on the island since - until today. Using his paranormal talents, Alan must interact with the ominous souls that seem to remain in the foreboding streets and buildings left on Godstone; or avoid them at all cost, should they be wrathful.

Being a paranormal investigator, none of this is new to Alan Rebels. The mysterious Godstone however and his search for answers to his father’s disappearance put Alan’s skills to the test. More than any investigation before, Godstone shakes Alan’s convictions of what is possible in the world of the occult. Maybe Godstone hides a curse that can be lifted… but should it be?

It is a beautifully made game. Reminded me of Silent Hill and Layers of Fear somewhat. The riddles are not hard but still entertaining. The atmosphere of the locations is mesmerizing. Loved the soundtrack too. As a big fan of the paranormal and the occult I just fell in love with this game! Controls are very comfortable. Ah, and that voice! Great voice acting!

As a horror fan who is also a big giant chicken, I found this game to be seriously lacking in any sort of tension or build up. I do feel like that would've made the scary moments more impactful. That said, I quite enjoyed the story and the aesthetic and it was a fun game for my community and I to experience together on stream. Pros: - beautiful game - soundtrack on point - entertaining - Doug Cockle is great even if he does sound exactly like Geralt the whole time lol - jumpscares absolutely caught me off guard a few times - the artwork in the book as you investigate is very cool Cons: - the lack of tension had me not scared to walk around and explore, I feel like having that tension is a big part of a good horror game - the story was a little hard to follow towards mid to late game, but things do tie together in the end - some performance blips when streaming and I have a pretty good PC The cons were not enough to make me not recommend this game. I think it's a fun adventure experience. Perhaps if you're looking for a good horror game experience, this maybe wouldn't be the game for you. If you want a fun game with an interesting story, especially if yo…

Pros: graphics smooth gameplay interesting visuals Alright but needs improvement: Story is good, but very badly delivered at some times. Reminding the players several times about important elements, which was unnecessary. Delivery and some plot moments are delivered quite stiffly and or out out of nowhere. Each location feels unique, but are missing depth. There is not a lot to do or look for and after some time feels very railroady. There are collectibles, but I think the game could have benefited from more of them. Also some more pieces of lore to be found around the map for players to read. Cons Powers, are interesting, but are in my opinion not used enough in the game. There are many places and locations I was hoping to see more with the pendulum or be able to interact with the world, reveal secret locations and or discover mysteries, but in the end some of the powers became useless for large gameplay parts. Some parts of the story feel very railroad, and are missing in exploration and interactivity. The main voice actor did a great job, but the script was rather bad at many moment.

to enjoy this game is to manage expectations. The story and the atmosphere are great, from time to time there is a jumpscare but compared to other "horror" games its a mild chuckle then and there the biggest plus is the protagonist and the voice actor, up until now i never recognized how much of an impact a good voice actor can bring to the table the rest of the cast is okish they serve their purpose but are not memorable. the biggest issue are the "bosses" and the other characters, for an unreal enginge game they just look extremly bad especially the ghosts. this stands out because the enviroment is beautifully made. overall a nice but very short game. i enjoyed it !

This game was promising but is suffuring from gameplay issues (like hitboxes). The voice acting shows no emotions, and finally the munic and scenario are so cliché that it turns boring...
