This is very much a walking simulator, but these games have proven to be successful if developed in a way in which the atmosphere and writing is strong enough to hold up the game. Because this game features no other mechanics to distract from these things, I focused even more on these elements, and for the most part I think it pulls it off. If you are up for a very short experience of around 60 – 90 minutes, knowing that you’re there to just soak in the environment, then you’ll find a very genuine and heartfelt tribute to people who have gone through or are going through cancer. If you were to pick apart The Secrets of Hope, you’d find the foundations of a fairly generic walking simulator. However, I couldn’t help but feel the developer’s genuine desire to make a heartfelt experience here, and I think they should be proud of the fact that they’ve done that. It doesn’t really shine in any particular area, but at the same time I would say it achieves what it sets out to do. It’s a game which tackles a difficult subject in a respectful way, resulting in an atmospheric experience which is welcoming to both gamers and non-gamers alike. It has some pretty nice voice acting but the sound cuts out at the start of most of the files. The map is a little bit too large for the amount of actual content that is present. The piano music is nice to listen to and the environment is extremely pretty. I think I'd be happier at $10 than $17 but there is a demo, so if you try out the demo and are still keen, then I'd say go for it. https://youtu.be/5_BxkL-9Eqo

So, in the vein of 'Dear Esther' and 'The First Tree'; Secrets is a gorgeous walk through a life examined. While I haven't personally lost a person dear to me to cancer, Secrets of Hope very much explores the depth of what it must be like. It tackles a painful subject with the utmost respect and care and it draws you in.

It's not a bad game at all, It's sweet. Short, but sweet. I think what bothered me was the bad mixdown, the voice was either way too loud or way too quiet. The credits music blasted my ears out. I turned the wind down and it still felt too loud. That was a little irritating. But didn't stop me from playing. Something else I have noticed was one Achievement being a little out of place. I've gotten the 'Collect Them All - Collect all cards in the forest scene.' Achievement early, when i still had 3 cards to pick up. 40 minutes in, I've finished the game, which felt disappointing after being told it'd take 2 to 3 hours, but i guess that's on me. Not leaving a negative review, the game was still very nice, i love those sort of games. But it didn't quite fully reach my expectations
