Towards The Pantheon is an imaginative independent role-playing game that takes recognizable ideas from classic turn-based RPGs and reshapes them into something considerably stranger. Developed and published by Connor O.R.T. Linning, the game combines traditional party-based adventuring with comedy, horror, exploration, puzzles, and deliberately unconventional world-building. Its pixel-art appearance immediately suggests a retro RPG, but the adventure does not simply imitate older genre standards. Instead, it uses those familiar foundations to support a world filled with unusual civilizations, eccentric situations, darker surprises, and characters whose abilities influence both combat and exploration. "Towards The Pantheon" is a very poorly made "I Can't Believe It's Not RPG Maker" JRPG train wreck with very poorly done pixelcrap assets (that look worse than just flipping RPG Maker assets) and of course you can't have an amateur pixelcrap JRPG without a cringey high school anime club dropout fanfiction involving the developers imagainary girlfriend. This time the imaginary girlfriend is called Freyja, who is a completely generic anime fanclub thing. The story revolves around Freyja and her party being summoned to defeat the source of The Sworn Light, which is gaining power throughout the world, which is a pretty terrible plot, but what should we expect. I guess if I wrote fan-fictions about my imaginary girlfriend I'd be terrified of light. This feels more like a tech demo or a project smacked together hurriedly to try make a kind of minimum viable product just good enough to pass the developers unambitious idea and shove it into Steam Direct to see if you can actually pay $100 and publish junk through Steam Direct. I want to like it but it's too simple--there isn't enough true choice in the game. I made it through getting the second character and a boss; combat has no type advantage afaik. Leveling up meant working towards the next special node, no real choice. Cute game, good for newer gamers!
