About Utopia Must Fall

Utopia Must Fall is a vector-flavored base-defending arcade shooter with rapid progression, procedurally generated attack waves and enough upgrade variety to suit both the defensive or aggressive player.

It incorporates elements from tower defense, roguelikes and beyond, all neatly packaged into a laser-sharp bullet-purgatory arcade frenzy! Easy To Learn: firing happens automatically, just steer the city's turret and launch the occasional sky-clearing nuclear warhead. Each day of survival is rewarded with an upgrade for your defenses, choose wisely to keep humanity alive for as long as possible.
Sizable Upgrade Tree: progress is fast and allows you to pick strategies to suit your playing style — beef up your rail gun into a multi-barrel death machine, strengthen your shield's auto defense abilities, deploy and configure an array of autonomous battle drones and laser turrets, or go all out on aggression and see out Utopia's final days with a stockpile of nukes and a shotgun the size of a building. Arcade-Focused: In Utopia, all universes are created equal, and death is final. Earn upgrades and unlock new abilities by completing mini-challenges as you defend the city.  There is a light meta-progression now that allows you to unlock Opportunity Upgrades to use in later runs, but the vast majority of options are unlocked with skill as opposed to grind. Get good to get the good stuff! Laser-Shiny: built with our own V99 graphics engine, bringing you the retro-modern vector arcade style you didn't know you needed yet.  This game is a work-in-progress. I bought this game because it was recommended by the Nova Drift dev and had a similar art style. The art style is great, but this dev could learn a lot from how Nova Drift handles difficulty and build diversity. My main problem with the game is how it scales difficulty. While later days introduce more complex enemies and send more enemies at once, enemy health increases rapidly. It seems to be the main form of difficulty scaling. Within the first week, even buying every weapon upgrade, an enemy wave that could be killed as they enter the screen requires two passes with the main weapon. It makes enemies feel very spongy and takes away from what is initially very crisp handling. I compare this to Nova drift where enemy health only starts to increase in the late game, and both enemy speed and damage are also used as scaling mechanics. Build diversity is also lacking. There are several different upgrade paths, and the game presents multiple choices with interesting trade offs. The problem I have found is that many of those paths seem like traps. The number of viable options is much lower than it first seems. I might just be bad at the game, but the bullet spongy enemies in particul…

Wow. What an addictive game. Simple concept with a highly varied upgrade path in the game. It's fun to explore the different paths to see how long you can survive. I really enjoy this one.

The most addictive game I've played in years. Insanely difficult after a certain point. For me that point came after killing the technosphere once after many failed attempts. I could only make it as far as level 40. I had to modify the code to give me hundreds of extra nukes to progress further unfortunately. After 100 hrs of play i've only made it to day 51 and at that point all the tree slections been filled for a long time and no new enemies will appear anyway. Further progression at that point requires me to give up shields for the city at the start and try to never take a single shot. Something that's pretty hard to accomplish without a major grind from day one. There really needs to be a multiple lives option or save states in the game to allow players to see all the enemies and experience the game fully. It's gets really crazy and fun after day 40 but at that point you had better have lots of spare nukes. Visually the game is stunning. Vector graphics will always hold a place in my heart because i grew up in the late 70's and all through the 80's in arcades. A vector game hasn't stunned me this much since I first started playing Tempest. There's nothing comparable to good…
