The "StS but encounters are tactical battles" is implemented perfectly competently here, but what really makes Valor of Man stand out are the unique mechanics that those tactical battles revolve around. In addition to the actions that they take on their turns, enemies have reactions that are triggered every time that they're the primary target of a player character's attack. This system is quite intricate and takes some getting used to (toggle the bestiary tab on and *read* enemy's abilities when you first encounter them), but it's a very compelling riff on the standard some-flavor-of-initiative-based turn ordering systems. The second major twist is that player characters can be eliminated from combat either when their HP reaches 0 *or* when their secondary resource ("courage") reaches 0. This resource can be reduced by enemies, but is more frequently reduced as a cost associated with the use of more powerful player abilities. This cost often only triggers some percentage of the time that a given ability is used, which speaks to my only substantive complaint about game mechanics to this point - much of the variance revolves around dodging low rolls on non-deterministic courag…2 found this helpful

Valor of Man is a real hidden gem. It has beautiful graphics, a strong dark-fantasy atmosphere, and a visually impressive world that immediately pulls you in. The turn-based combat is satisfying, and experimenting with different heroes, abilities, and party combinations keeps each run interesting. The Tormentor, the first boss you encounter, instantly reminded me of The Butcher, which was a great touch and made the opening especially memorable. My only small criticism is that I would have liked the story and characters to be a little deeper. The world has a lot of potential, and a more developed narrative would have made the journey feel even more impactful. Overall, this is a polished, entertaining, and underrated tactical roguelite that deserves more attention.1 found this helpful

I enjoyed this game more than I thought I would! Interesting linear story plot and nice replay value. Pros: Fun turn based combat. Game has good pacing. Good for playing in 30-60 minute time chunks. Cons: Enjoyed plot but the story was a little vague and the end was unclear to me. A little more detail would have been nice.1 found this helpful
