What Steam players say
Recent verbatim reviews from Steam — separate from playze.io community reviews below.
Players praise the game's exceptional writing, atmospheric storytelling, and deep tactical combat that captures the Warhammer 40K universe with impressive detail and care. However, some note that class variety and moral choices feel more limited than expected, and the dated graphics and RPG design may not appeal to players seeking more modern sensibilities or refined mechanical complexity.
If you're 15 or have the emotional maturity of a 15 year old the plot of this game absolutely excellent and rad and deep and cool, dude As a middle aged gamer, there's nothing much here for me, not even really any interesting Warhammer 40k stuff. Dark Elf section sucks and I stopped playing at that point, very very much mid RPG design from 2004. "What if every choice was a bad choice?" No thanks, I'm good, I've seen that before, many many times, it is as uninspiring and edgy now as it was then. Anyway do play this game if you're 15, it's rad as hell, if you've got more refined tastes you may find yourself bored. Owlcat is the tradesman of game design, good solid work, every time, but with no art.3 found this helpful
Game made me remember why I fell in love with 40k to begin with.1 found this helpful
The amount of detail in this game is insane. Truly an incredible experience if you enjoy fantastic writing, politics, build variety. I can't stress enough how obvious it is how much work and love went into making this; it's apparent at every turn. I hope that everyone that worked on this (especially the writers!!!) are proud of themselves. The only shortcomings for me: - equipment variety is certainly deep enough, but I did feel a little pigeonholed by the archetypes. Coming from WotR where the class options were both wide and deep, it just felt more narrow in scope. You really only have a few classes to choose from, but to be fair you can build them out in many different ways. - morality feels very narrow as well. In most cases you basically have the option to be dogmatic / neutral / heretical with very little in between. I get this, as the 40k universe is so focused on the contrast between these things, but it often felt like choices lacked nuance. I ended up not minding this too much though. I just had to reframe it in my mind as essentially choosing between the three at the start of the run. Then I was able to treat the game a bit more linearly, rather than a univers…
Death to all Heretics. Grace the Emperor!
Dungeons and Dragons in Space.
An absolute masterpiece of a CRPG, even if the graphics show a bit of age. Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader is simply incredible. The writing, the atmosphere, and the tactical combat capture the grimdark essence of the 40k universe perfectly. You truly feel the weight of being a Rogue Trader making galaxy-spanning decisions. The graphics feel slightly dated and old-school, but honestly, the depth of the gameplay, the story, and the sheer immersion more than make up for it. If you love deep RPGs and the 40k lore, this is an absolute must-play!
