Wave Break impresses with its stylish synthwave aesthetic, excellent soundtrack, and creative concept of combining skateboarding mechanics with boat physics. However, players consistently struggle with imprecise controls, camera issues that obscure the environment, unclear objectives, and level design that makes navigation frustrating, particularly when rails are tightly clustered or when the floaty physics undermine the precision needed for trick chains and high scores.
Wave Break, developed and published by Funktronic Labs, is an audacious arcade experiment that fuses the trick-chaining DNA of classic skateboarding games with the momentum and physics of high-speed boating. Branded as “skateBOATING,” the game wears its influences proudly while committing to a neon-soaked identity all its own, channeling synthwave aesthetics, irreverent humor, and a relentless focus on flow. It’s a title that immediately announces its personality—loud, stylish, and kinetic—then challenges players to meet it on its own terms. The core of Wave Break revolves around mastering movement on water as if it were pavement. Players pilot nimble boats through compact, densely designed maps packed with rails, ramps, half-pipes, and environmental features meant to be hit in rapid succession. Tricks mirror familiar skate staples—grinds, grabs, flips, manuals—and the scoring system encourages long, uninterrupted combos that reward spatial awareness and timing. What makes the game distinct is how water physics shape these mechanics: momentum carries farther, turns are broader, and lining up a grind often requires anticipating drift and current rather than snapping to an angle. Unfortunately a lot of small issues bubble up to the surface to make it hard to enjoy. The objectives can be hard to find when the spaces are, at times, indistinct from one area to another. The controls are fine, however some of the spaces (like the ice level) have rails so close together it can be hard to go exactly where you need to go by snapping to something you weren't expecting. The camera often doesn't show you exactly what you need to be seeing at any given moment, making scanning the space a bit of a nightmare, especially when a rail swings you out to a direction you weren't ready for and haven't had the time to take in the space. It's technically well put together but struggles mostly with feel.1 found this helpful
This soundtrack has an amazing game attached to it.
Ugh, I really wanted to give this one a try because it seems like it should be so good and right up my alley; it's literally just THPS with a Miami/synthwave aesthetic and anthropomorphic animals. Unfortunately, the controls for this thing feel really off; trying to steer during a manual just absolutely destroys your balance, and you move way too floaty (which I understand because you're literally in a speedboat) but this doesn't work for a sports game where you have to be precise to get high scores and on big combo lines, along with so much of maps just being water with a couple of grind rails, with it being so hard to get onto the land parts but so easy to fall off due to your high speed and lack of precision. I've given it like an hour and completed 2 maps but it's just not gelling for me at all really. Crying shame because I was really looking forward to playing this one.
Very Nice!
