About Witchfire

✦ AI summary

Blast through cursed biomes as an undead assassin powered by witchfire, scavenging loot and building your arsenal through roguelite progression as you hunt the Witch of the Black Sea. From the creators of Painkiller and Bulletstorm, it's a skill-driven shooter where you choose when to extract your gains or risk everything confronting powerful Familiars for greater rewards.

Witchfire is a single-player RPG shooter from the creative minds behind Painkiller and Bulletstorm. Embark on perilous expeditions, vanquishing foes to enhance your powers and arsenal. Scavenge valuable resources and retreat to your sanctuary, or push your luck by confronting Familiars— the powerful guardians of the witch.

Skill and knowledge are essential for success against the Witch of the Black Sea and her witchfire-fueled army. If you die, return to the battlefield for a one-time chance to reclaim what you lost, or attack again with a new plan.
Explore vast, immersive biomes and choose your battleground to confront the witch's forces. Each completed encounter strengthens you and your arsenal through the roguelite system called Arcana. There are countless ways to build your preyer and dominate the witch.
Only the most wicked sinners are transformed into preyers, undead assassins sustained by witchfire flowing through their veins. In the base of operations known as the Hermitory, you can choose from a wide selection of distinctive weapons, spells, and artifacts to build your own preyer.
On each expedition, you can extract your looted items or, if you feel confident, confront the witch’s Familiar to unlock new areas and powerful items and upgrades.
Piece together a story from the past to save the future. Investigate ships crashing on the verge of the witch’s land and locate the artifact that can tip the scales in the ongoing war between the Church and the witches.
During the Early Access period, Witchfire will undergo changes, including new areas, enemies, weapons, and tools of destruction. Help us shape the game to reach its full potential!

For me, this beats destiny 2 as a looter shooter all day long. The progression is well balanced and most of the weapons are fun to use, and synergise well with the rings and spells. I prefer the occult overtones as opposed to space themes anyway. I was on the fence for at least a year but as I was having a lull in gaming, having gone as far as possible with Voin, I jumped in. an absolute bargain at £16.

First off, I have to commend the devs with how they've been able to get the game to look. Is this one of a handful of games that has pushed Unreal Engine 4 to its limits? It sure does looks beautiful. You could take a screenshot anywhere in this game and it would look awesome. I believe this is one of the last engines, where 'hand-crafted' art direction could still shine through, and the whole team responsible for graphics did a top notch job here! The story and theme is also very interesting. You play as an "unrepentant sinner" whose sole mission is to rid this world of 'pure evil' spirits. You have been guided to carry out this mission by the powers who be. The character you play as is something akin to an anti-villain. So basically it's a very gnarly world. Loads of biblical and spiritual imagery/ dialogue. It's inspired work. I liked it very much. The major problem with this game, is it's gameplay. Taking inspiration from 2014+ gaming culture with the likes of Destiny, the game has you grinding again and again to unlock this or unlock that, and to eventually progress to the next level. Numbers popping up on the screen when you shoot an enemy, 'roguelite-esque' …

I LOVVVE a bit of difficulty being a souls vet. This game has amazing bones however the punishment is absurd. Gun play and environment are amazing S-Tier. That said I have refunded twice, I want to enjoy the game sooooooo soooooo much but all that happens is I want to throw my controller through the wall and turn it off. If this is how I feel playing, good luck getting anything but sweats. I beg the devs to really examine balance and ask themselves if they want 10,000 people playing or 100k. Skill issue(maybe) but I think I have played enough "hard" games NG++++++'s to have a decent feel. I honestly want to try it again right now but I believe I'll get frustrated 15min in. Itsw not multiplayer so what's wrong with difficulty settings. People gets very upset and take the stance of GET GOOD but that doesn't put asses in the seats. Only asking to ease into to game a liitle more instead of hating life from the jump. Scaling so high from to word go will alienate more players than it brings in. I say this all with love because I REALLY want this game to succeed. Other than D2 best gunplay EVER.

Long story short - Great Game. For a long time i haven't enjoyed the game like this one. Yes, it is early access, and, no, it doesn't even feel like one. Graphics, sound, effects and story idea is just great. Game is hard, no tutorials, and I found that one of the best things about it. Keep up the great work Astronauts!
