It's okay. I'm HSK2 level, but its difficult to play due to the lack of audio feedback. I thought it would be a good learning tool for character recognition, but there was no amount of messing with the settings where I could get the pinyin and the character available in the battles / conversations, and not having an option to hear things was frustrating. I could see myself returning after some more development has taken place but as it stands, I don't think it's a super effective learning tool for a character based language and if I was a lower speaking level I think getting through the tutorial would be impossible.13 found this helpful
I was getting sick of paying monthly fees for language apps (tried duo and babbel and drop) that just made me tap the same words over and over. I got the game on sale, and getting a full RPG for a single purchase is a massive steal, especially since you actually have to read the dialogue to solve the puzzles. The dedicated Pinyin module actually explains the tones properly, which is something a lot of those popular mobile apps completely ignore. I did run into a small freeze at some point, and the mouse movement sometimes jerky when you click too far from your character, but no game breking issue. If you get overwhelmed by traditional textbook learning like me and get bored from regualr apps, this is a good way to pick up the basics without stressing out5 found this helpful
I was really excited about this as a dead beginner, but in presenting the 4 tones to me and testing me to identify which sound is associated with what pinyin marking, it tells me when I get it wrong but never tells me what I should have answered. So for example I answer 1st tone, and it says incorrect, okay. Which tone is it? Can I replay it and try to identify that sound with the correct answer? No I cannot. I do not understand how I am supposed to learn like that. I kept trying to tell myself it wasn't going to be easy and learning takes sticking with it, but I need the actual information to learn, at least personally. So this was a great idea but did not meet my needs as a dead beginner.3 found this helpful
