MILD Spoilers In This Review!! (But not of the Final Culprit) I initially played the demo for The Mermaid Mask back at WASD in April of 2024 and fell in love with it instantly. The atmosphere, the characters, the voice acting; it was all fantastic! I had a lovely chat with Adam, who told me about the universe with which Grimoire and Sally reside, as well as how there was another game called Tangle Tower. That night I had played through all of Tangle Tower and knew that this was my kind of game and couldn't WAIT for The Mermaid Mask to release in full. I finished this game at 3am this morning that I write this review. I was gripped from start to finish, amazed by the atmosphere, the puzzles and especially the mystery! I found myself being lost in a sea of red herrings in the best way, then everything paying off in the most satisfying of ways. From silly gags like Gripp's Shop not letting me leave without attempting to purchase, or the Chapter Titles from 'The Box that Would Not Open' to 'The Box That was Actually Really Easy to Open', to the deeply unsettling confession of the murderer and their true motive all along. play it. i definitely recommend playing detective grimoire: secret of the swamp and tangle tower (the prior mystery games in the series) because they make A LOT of references, so much so that it adds to the lore in abundance. they've added new features which are most definitely improvements and it just somehow gets better with each game? its not often you see a mystery series that doesn't fall off. sfb games has found their formula and it is working AMAZINGLY. once you finish the game and just browse through the art gallery or simply just see how much work has been put into it, you really appreciate everything a lot more. EVERYTHING IS STUPIDLY IN PLAIN SIGHT. BUT PLAY IT ANYWAYS! I GUARANTEE YOU WON'T FIGURE IT OUT IMMEDIATELY :)
Absolute and incredible fun. Iterates on Tangle Tower in good ways, the puzzles are great and the characters are all compelling.
