✦ AI summary

SpellForce 2 - Anniversary Edition is a story-driven RPG/RTS hybrid that players praise for its engaging combat micromanagement, interesting narrative involving powerful mages and dragons, diverse factions with distinct playstyles, and quest design that goes beyond typical fetch quests. Common complaints center on control issues and micromanagement difficulty due to frequent misclicks, though most players feel the gameplay improvements over the original are substantial.

TL;DR Point and click strategy Wot I liked - Micro in combat is intense and fun; - Actually interesting story with powerful mage, their PO servants, addiction and dragons; - Several factions: The Good (elves, dwarves, humans), The Bad (orcs, barbarians, trolls), The Ugly (dark elfs, gargoyles, shadows) and the Queers from DLC (orientals, magic golems, dragons); - You can more or less freely move through different maps (so you can come back to finish old quests); - Some exploration; - Day and night cycle; - A bunch of quests that go one step further than your common fedex blend; - Some puzzles, including text puzzles; - Cool looking spiders; - Graphics looks outdated not but for early 00s is was quite good. Wot I disliked - Microcontrol - you misclick all the times due to poor frames; - Big combats are uncontrollable; - The game misses such features are showing healthbars of all units, gamespeed, hotkeys; - Itemization: quest rewards are usually useless and are replaced by the next random drop. There are few ways tosort equipment and manage it; - The game could really use respec feature: there're actually some simplistic builds in the game, but I figured it out…

Tentative Recommendation When I played the original Spellforce a few weeks ago, I made a prediction about the direction the sequels would take the original's unique RPG/RTS hybrid gameplay: "Smoother gameplay, more differentiated factions, but with more restrictive character building and some of the interesting quirks sanded off". After playing Spellforce 2's first campaign through to completion, I'm feeling pretty good about that prediction. In fact, most of the overall gameplay has been improved here, from visuals, to map design & quests, unit responsiveness & control, gameplay speed, and factions. The factions/races in particular deserve a more detailed mention, as the changes to them are no doubt something I can see being contentious. Yes, there are only three, compared to the original game's six. Yes, the Humans, Elves and Dwarves have been consolidated into a single faction, as have the Orcs and Trolls. Yes, a bunch of the old units are gone. But there are now much more noticable differences between the three, and the overall unit rosters are a lot more interesting as a result (though frankly still not quite interesting enough). That being said, what …

Personally, because I played Glest when I was a kid, I find this a very interesting gamemode. Story-wise it's ok, nothing to brag about in my opinion, but the game itself is pretty much a story-based Glest, mixed with character levelling, skill-trees & equipment customisation, but the main reason why I enjoy it, is the ability to build around your own structures, upgrading your forces, expanding your dominion & improve your gathering, all while advancing the story. Surely not everyone's cup of tea, but to me it's the exact Glest mechanic in a continuous, story-driven map-progression. To put it simply, me likey :)
