About Epistory - Typing Chronicles

✦ AI summary

Play as a muse exploring a beautiful origami world where every action—from movement to combat to puzzle-solving—is controlled entirely through keyboard typing. Watch a writer's story unfold in real-time as you gather inspiration, defeat enemies in typing-based battles, and unravel the magical mysteries hidden within her imagination.

Epistory is an atmospheric adventure typing game that tells the story of a writer lacking inspiration who asks her muse to help write her latest book.

In Epistory you play the muse, a fictional character in a world where everything is untold. Your adventure begins on a blank page, but the world will soon become larger and livelier as you gather inspiration, solve its mysteries and defeat its enemies. From movement to opening chests and fighting in epic battles, every element in the game is controlled exclusively with the keyboard.

As you progress and explore the fantasy origami world, the story literally unfolds in the writer’s mind and the mysteries of the magic power of the words are revealed.

Features

  • Explore a beautiful paper craft world: play as the muse riding a giant three tailed fox, lost in a fantasy 3D world
  • More than just typing: solve mysterious puzzles, unlock magic powers and defeat enemies in adrenaline pumping epic combats
  • A writer’s block? Collect fragments and inspirations points to unfold the story as you explore the origami world in the writer’s head. But there is more to the story than meets the eye…
  • All in keyboard: from movements, combats to even menus, control everything with a keyboard
  • Adaptive difficulty: if your hands fly around the keyboard or if you are a slow typist, the game features a dynamic difficulty system that evolves to fit each players’ skill set
  • Competitive Arena Mode: challenge other players for the top spot in the arena leaderboards
  • Play in your own language: game texts are localized in English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, Polish with voice overs in English. The game supports several keyboard layouts (QWERTY, QWERTZ, AZERTY, BEPO, Dvorak, Workman and Colemak)

✦ AI summary

Epistory - Typing Chronicles offers engaging typing-based combat with elemental powers and a satisfying gameplay loop that shines in the early hours, though players note it falters in later chapters with environmental design issues, unclear story, and UI problems that make some levels frustratingly difficult to navigate. Most reviewers praise the core typing mechanic and the rewarding feeling of improvement, but the game's technical polish appears inconsistent, particularly in wind-themed levels with visibility and control issues.

Epistory - Typing Chronicles is a simple game based around the idea of well.. typing. It's basically a type the word to fight game, where when you complete the word on the enemy, it gets strike. You have 4 elemental powers to play with to fend off waves of enemies at certain locations which can be considered the challanging part. You have a bit of exploration, unlocking chests and getting some fragments. You have some very light progression system where you can get upgrades for your character. Overall in the 6 hours runtime I had fun, the first 3 hours were like 8s and 9s because of the fun gameplay loop. Problem is towards the 5 hour mark you already notice a lot of the game flaws. My biggest gripe is the story is kind of scattered brain? like I couldn't follow any of it. And then there's also the fact that some powers are more useless than others and how the elemental triggers only if there's another word adding for the challange but confusing sometimes. Worse is for the lightning weapon you get you can't really judge the distance between the enemies so you end up guessing "is this going to hit the other gigantic word". Overall I think you will have a good fun and this is why …

For the TLDR first 3 chapters are mostly challenging but fun, then they didn't seem to finish working on their UI and environmental effects. The wind level activates words in layers you aren't even playing on so you can't attack enemies in front of you. They used white letters on a white cloud background so you can't see who you are supposed to focus on as well as being set at the back of the screen with 360 approach from the creatures. The purple windmill off to the left keeps trying to activate even though it is on another level below. The directional controls are diagonal and very delayed. You will get caught on every asset in the environment trying to move. The art style looks very neat, but it is so damned hard to navigate even at the beginning of the game and it will point you in a corner and not let you turn around because it centers you too close. Story rich is an exaggeration as well. There is occasional narration that often gets very whiny and uses a lot of rescue tropes.

This game was, and still is, a little difficult. However, as my typing gets better, I literally feel like a wizard. It's so unbelieably fun. Also, the ESDF mod made the controls much easier for me. I'm still pretty early in the game, and I am really looking forward to when my skill actually gets good.l
