Gears 5

A great game, when it doesn't try to do its open-world stuff that feels a bit forced and undercooked. The gameplay is very polished and fun, bringing several improvements over its predecessors (like being able to play as Jack in co-op!). It also successfully continues the more serious tone and themes brought by Gears 4. I found it to be very enjoyable despite a few flaws (namely, the skiff sections feeling rather empty, some cheesy early banter between Del and Kait, and Del himself being very dull and flat in this game). Overall, it's a solid entry, and it's really fun. Personally, I thought it was a bit overhated on release.

Whoever added Taps (or at least whoever made their spawn locations completely random and usually indefensible) basically killed the joy of Horde mode for me. Along with time-decaying energy drops, fast armored enemies that will ignore/destroy all fortifications, and increased incentive for players to spend their limited resources upgrading themselves rather than shared defenses; they basically took Gears 4 and went 'Too many people are having fun playing a wave defense game... defensively, how do we make that experience miserable?' If Gears 4 were on steam I'd be playing that instead and if I didn't have so much nostalgia for Gears 4, I'd be playing anything else.

I had never played a *Gears* game before, and neither had my partner, so *Gears 5* was our first experience with the series. We honestly found the opening two episodes rather "boring", and the lengthy tutorial didn’t exactly help. However, once we got past that initial hurdle, the game became considerably more enjoyable. The exploration sections were a pleasant surprise, and the campaign kept getting better as we progressed. We didn’t experience any crashes or noticeable frame-rate issues throughout our playthrough. There was only one instance where we had to restart a scene in an optional exploration area because an event glitched, but otherwise the game ran remarkably well. The final levels in particular were spectacular and made the journey feel worthwhile. We didn’t try the PvP or PvE modes, so this review is entirely based on the campaign. And honestly, the campaign alone was enough to give us a great time. It’s not quite a masterpiece —the writing can be weak at times, and some of the characters introduced early on can be irritating— but the excellent "art direction", impressive environments, and sheer scale of the later sections make up for a lot of those shortcomings.
