Wrestling Classics: Olde Timey Pro Wrestling

This is a great idea and a unique take on the wrestling genre, but unfortunately there's not much here. There's a handful of moves, which would make sense for the time period but there still could have been a variety of strikes, submissions and suplexes. The moves that are in the game look unfinished. The training doesn't give you enough time to even understand the grapple timing. I was stuck in a corner and could only hit strikes on my opponent until he fell down. I pinned him and won the match but he still had a good chunk of health left. People are desperate for new wrestling games. At this stage, the game feels less than titles on the NES. Pro Wrestling, Tecmo World Wrestling And Toukon Club are more enjoyable in a few short minutes than what is featured here. If the developer wants to continue this series than I hope they look to those games as inspiration. As well as other titles such as the underrated All Japan series on the Super Famicom.

I love the concept of the game but... Why are the grapples so hard to time? Dammit.

With it's sepia tones, roaring '20's soundtrack and overall atmosphere from a bygone era of Wrestling before the time of Sports Entertainment, Old Timey Pro Wrestling is certainly a retro Wrestling title with a lot of charm behind it. Unfortunately, Olde Timey Wrestling's greatest flaw is it's grapple system. On the surface, the grapple system follows a timing based engine similar to what players would find in the Fire Pro Wrestling series Simply walk up to your opponent, wait for both Wrestlers to lock up, and then input your grapple (once and only once). On difficulty levels 1 to 3, being able to pull off grapples against the CPU is a cakewalk. Go one level higher to level 4 and the CPU will begin dominanting the player with near-perfect execution whenever a grapple is involved. The difficulty spike from novice to expert ramps up very quickly in Championship mode as well, making the whole affair feel unplayable once the CPU starts upping it's difficulty factor. Update notes have indicated that the author of Old Timey is aware of the CPU issues, but the problem still persists at the time of writing this review. I only have a few minutes in it thus far. However, the game is what it promises to be. A simple, basic, arcade like wrestling game inspired by the days of old. There are options to play with to keep you entertained for a few matches. And hey, its only 4 bucks US. Definitely $4 worth of fun here, and then some. Reminds me of old NES wrestling games, so hits that nostalgia button perfectly.

I like the game but the grapple timing is off. Please fix Edit: The grapple has been fixed but now I win every grapple. It needs some balance.
