Layers of Fear (2016) (2016)

I can't believe it. I bought the game because I've seen it's a classic in the genre. I saw it's about art- a topic deeply personal for me so I purhased. I started the game, went inside the house, then the living room. I was impressed by the design of the house and how "lively" it felt, despite the circumstances. But the music... Oh the song... I was looking around, finding and reading notes, already sensing how something is very wrong. Then the descend into hell began. Gameplay wise it's nothing astonishing- you go around, do criptic (but rather easy) puzzles, the layout of the mansion changes as you progress, jumpscares here and there. I found the control for opening drawers and doors really cool, somehow done better than in Visage, for example, where you also drag the mouse to open something. 3-4 hours later... Tears won't stop dropping. This is not your typical "Oh spooky mansion with ghosts and jumpscares" horror. If you came for that, you may be disappointed. This is a story about guilt and an attempt of redemtion. The price of greatness. Of course, bear in mind my opinion is entirely subjective and based on the familiarity with the theme. I wanted to like this game more than I did, but I just didn't. I ended up getting the game for about $2 while it was on sale (and I can't say I'm upset about that price) but I would never pay the full $20. Ever. While this game is visually stunning and the story isn't mind-numbingly boring, per se, the jump scares are... severely lacking. Safe to say, the fifth time your subject to a loud noise and spooky paining being melted away, it looses its touch. By the time I was at the last two chapters, I had little to no reaction to anything anymore, and I just wanted to finish the game. That being said, there was ONE subtle scare that I liked involving a door that was previously locked opening on its own and looking inside you could only see the face of a painting, but that isn't everyone's cup of tea. Ignoring a bit of the story logic which I won't spoil here, overall the story felt interesting only to slowly get a bit flatter. I found myself guessing things long before they ever happened, and while it was satisfying to find my theories were right, by the end I almost didn't care. Layers of Fear is the videogame equivalent of the haunted house attraction put on by the local theater group. You follow a linear path through your abandoned house, reliving your memories, solving simple puzzles, and collecting supplies to complete your masterpiece while the house continuously changes behind your back. There's lots of creepy atmosphere and a few jump scares, but the tension is mitigated by the fact that there's not any real physical danger* to your character.

I liked the game enough to buy part two after completing part one. It is a very dark and terrifying game with the dead eyes of dolls watching over you and rodents scurrying in the walls. I give this game a 4 out of 5.
