Canyon Capers (2014)

I grabbed this in a bundle and I get why the reviews are split, but for me it lands on the wrong side. The collectathon setup is fine on paper, gather your gems or chests, portal opens, run for it, except the jump is short, the movement is sluggish, and every hit knocks you back into whatever you were trying to avoid. What really killed it was respawning directly under a swinging axe on a late level while the clock kept ticking, which happened enough times that I stopped blaming myself. The time limits also fight the star ratings, so you either creep along carefully and run out of clock or rush and tank your health score. The music is genuinely catchy and the achievements are easy if that's your thing, but there are far better retro platformers to spend an evening on.

One of the worst games I've ever played and only launched out of a morbid curiosity (from a random bundle I got ages ago). By far the worst thing about this game is the poorly designed levels. Absolutely frustrating enemy and trap placements, almost as if it were designed with the intention to hurt you rather than provide meaningful challenge. The levels don't flow very well and it'll put you at odds with the timer for each level. Combine all that with the poor hurtboxes and awful knockback you experience when you take damage, and it's an exercise in frustration. If you want to study characteristics of a bad platformer or simply a bad game, this is one of them.
