Fearless Fantasy

Fearless Fantasy is a delightfully absurd little indie RPG with a grotesque, caricature-like art style that fully embraces its weirdness. Instead of focusing on complex mechanics, it keeps things simple with fast-paced gameplay, offbeat humour, funny characters, and timing-based battles. The gameplay can get pretty repetitive, though, and the humour is definitely a bit niche, so I can see it not clicking with everyone. But if you're looking for a short, bizarre parody of classic JRPGs, there's a good chance you'll get a few laughs out of it. The game is also only around 5 hours long, which works in its favour, as it gets in, does its weird little thing, and gets out before it starts to drag.

Fearless Fantasy is an incredibly streamlined game built on one simple thing: a combat system where you execute attacks and block damage by clicking circles and dragging your mouse through sliders like the rhythm game [i]Osu![/i] The story is well told albeit a bit plain, the hand-drawn graphics and oddball encounters rather charming, and the menus a little clunky given they were originally designed for a touchscreen. None of that is why you came here though. Every move you use and every enemy attack has a unique pattern of circles and sliders to represent it, like a sword swing requiring smooth arcs or a bow shot using precise aim to hit moving targets. Failing to guard an attack at all can absolutely devastate your party, but it only takes a decent block to leave you with only chip damage and a perfectly-executed combo string from your hero can completely turn the tide of battle. Combat is visceral and hard-hitting, with a system of enemy traits and status afflictions that allow for varied encounter strategy but still let skill shine through in satisfying moments. Not really my cup of tea but I appreciate the creativity on display here. This reminded me of simpler flash games you could play in your browser back in the day. If you yearn for something like that this would be a good buy for you.

Fearless Fantasy is a genuinely charming oddball of a game — a casual turn-based RPG with a bizarre art style, surprisingly funny writing, and a gesture-based combat system that has you swiping and clicking your mouse to pull off attacks. The combat mechanic is the heart of the experience, and when you nail a perfectly-timed 'epic' rating on a flashy special move, it feels satisfying in a way few traditional RPGs manage. That said, it's clearly a mobile port at its core, and the mouse controls can feel clunky compared to what a touchscreen would offer — especially on higher difficulties where precision really matters. At 3–5 hours for the story, it's short and sweet, which works in its favor; this is a palette cleanser, not an epic. If you can embrace its weirdness and don't mind the occasional control frustration, it's an easy recommendation — just don't go in expecting Final Fantasy.

This game feels incredibly nostalgic. It's obviously made by amateurs who grew up on armor games / newgrounds - and the game is very charming. In fact, "charming" is the main way to describe the game, because it's very funny even through it's jank. The gameplay is interesting too, they try a lot of new ideas. The main combat system is OSU, and you have to follow a rhythm to get the best attacks. Difficulty is a little hit or miss, and you'll have to grind a few areas to be able to afford items that remove your status effects. I got this game for cheap, and I'm looking forward to finishing it. EDIT: Just finished. The game is very well made. Great art, humor and gameplay. AND it's short. Unironic 5/5 stars, I really enjoyed this one.
