Gamedec - Definitive Edition

Do i want more people to experience this innocuous gem? Absolutely. Is it without faults? Absolutely not. The concept alone is worth it on a discount. This is a game about games and gamers. So, it is meta, but, in my opinion, it is handled quite savantly. It masters its subject matter from the first hour of play, and the deduction mechanics are fresh enough for the first few cases, which offer real dilemmas with branching outcomes. My main gripe is with the ending and late-game deduction. The end, while avant-garde in some ways, does not quite stick the landing. [spoiler] The final options feel a bit rail-roaded, for such an open-ended subject. A bit too Mass Effect 3 for my taste. [/spoiler] The deduction mechanic also shows its limitations as the scope of the game increases. If you are in the business for a good 10-ish hour long detective story, ripe with video game culture references in a sometimes overly satirical cyberpunk world, this is the game for you. It is currently a unicorn, and I cannot wait to see what these developers can do with this material in the future.

[h3]An idea is better than execution.[/h3] A detective solving video game crimes, hacks and bugs in a noir cyberpunk setting. Really intriguing premise. I was hooked right away. The world and lore are interesting. The game itself is divided into several chapters and every one of them feels like the game of its own. With its own setup, rules and secrets. Throughout these chapters you solve smaller incidents which merge into a bigger mystery resolved at the end. In each chapter you find clues that open various ways to proceed. The clue system presents itself as important, deterministic and ominous but your choices influence very little and it has little to no effect on the ending. Your options are quite often ill-formulated or confusing and you have to decide things blindly. But later you'll realize why. There are no right or wrong answers because what you choose is irrelevant. Sure, you're free to approach problems in various ways, you can change a thing here and there, you can choose different dialogue options, skip whole chapters or do mutually exclusive actions but none of it matters much in the end. Didn't like the writing which seems to be 95% of the game.

This game seems to have depth, but every story takes place in a simulation. Basically a different form of saying it was just a dream. Devs just lazy ?
