What Steam players say

The Witcher is praised for its rich lore, engaging story, and impressive graphics for its time, with players appreciating the mature themes and complex world-building that set it apart as a hidden gem. However, the game suffers from dated mechanics, janky combat that feels clunky by modern standards, and significant technical bugs including audio issues and a game-breaking bug that can prevent completion, making it difficult to recommend unless you're a dedicated Witcher fan or enjoy classic 2000s RPGs despite their age.

Before “Can it run Crysis?” became the big question, mine was “Can it run The Witcher?” I knew nothing about the game when I first played it. A friend came to my house carrying this sick-looking PC game box and said, “Mine can’t play it. Can we try yours?” We were both blown away. The game looked insane at the time, and my PC could barely run it on Low at 800x600. Even so, once we got into it, the game was incredible. It told a very different story about monsters and monster hunters, with plenty of mature themes. It felt like we had discovered a hidden gem, and looking at where the series is now, I’d say we did. Fast-forward to 2026. The Witcher 3 is getting another DLC, another sequel is on the way, and I decided it was time to see how the original runs on Steam Deck. Graphically, the Steam Deck has no issues running it. The controls, though... this game was made for PC, and it definitely wants a mouse and keyboard. Thankfully, the kind souls in the Steam community have created controller layouts that work surprisingly well. By the end of the tutorial, I was already used to them. If you’ve never experienced the original and you’re coming from The Witcher 3, be patient with it…
Classic 2000s RPG. 7/10. Originally I started with The Witcher 3, and got halfway through the game before deciding I wanted to experience the series in order. Going in, I thought this game would explain everything regarding the world and characters, but I'm still confused about certain things because I haven't read the books. However, it did help familiarize me with characters and explain some backstory for the future games. This game felt like a slog at times. I felt like dropping the game, but decided to push through. It's very dated and janky, even older games from that time feel more modern. Also, I didn't grow up playing this game, so I didn't have nostalgia for it. Therefore, it's hard to recommend this game unless you like 2000s RPGs or you're already a Witcher fan. PROS: It has an interesting story that keeps you captivated the whole way through. Also, each boss fight felt unique and epic, despite the bad combat. In addition, it has good music of different genres. And cool cutscenes, cinematics, and art. Moreover, it has thought provoking dialogue and choices. And last but not least, it utilized brilliant camera angles all throughout the game to express emotions. CONS…
Pros: + Great Lore, it's the Witcher, what did you expect? + Decent combat. + The NPC behavior is surprisingly good for a 2008 game. + Solid OST. + Decent graphics. Cons: - Windowing bugs. - Audio bugs. - Having too high FPS can cause issues, if that's the case it's recommended that you set up a FPS limit. - The game goes unresponsive after a cutscene in the
Old Vizima
causing the game to be impossible to complete. Verdict: The game is impossible to complete due to a bug, I can't rate it in a fair way.
pretty good overall game just really old now the fighting is kinda ♥♥♥♥ and sometimes you can just get stunlocked but i still had a fun time
So, this one caught me by surprise. I remember having tried it a very long time ago and my memory was: It's convoluted, difficult, but interesting. I hesitated many years to play it and only lately - since I originally intended to play The Witcher 2, I started the first part again because it's possible to take a savegame with me. Very convincing. The game is old and I decided to play easiest difficulty, since I just want to experience the story. It turned out this decision was completely correct. I do not need to bother too much with fighting mechanics, as I do not think they are timely. Instead I can focus on everything around: story, quests, items, glossary and so on. And these things paint the picture of an interesting and complex world. This is exactly what I wanted: Learn the world before I finally will end up in part 3 and ultimately the 4th installment.
