About Retro Game Crunch

Retro Game Crunch is a series of 7 games, full of the charm and challenge of the 8-bit generation. Each world feels like an authentic NES classic. This genre-spanning collection includes...
  • Super Clew Land – Eat, evolve, and explore in this happy-go-lucky exploration-based platformer.
  • End of Line – A game about learning how to die. Figure out how to thwart autonomous repair bots in this puzzle adventure.
  • GAIAttack – Gaia has summoned four champions to rise up and destroy the pillaging Sky Pirates. A beat 'em up platformer for up to four players.
  • Paradox Lost – Abby crashes her plane, but stumbles upon a gun that shoots time travel! A metroidvania across three time periods.
  • Wub-Wub Wescue – A pug must brave the jungle and navigate its treacherous rhythms, all to rescue his master. An early 80’s arcade platformer.
  • Brains & Hearts – A two player card game that takes place inside Albert Einstein's dream. Play against the CPU or a friend.
  • Shūten – A samurai shoot 'em up for one or two players. Owari’s village is trampled as ancient gods awaken. He takes up sword to end them.

This tight package of 7 little games is a great distraction for short bursts. My favorites was "Wub-Wub Wescue" and "Super Clew Land". Wub-Wub Wescue reminded me of old codemasters puzzle adventure games like Linus Spacehead or Dizzy, with some Donkey Kong Junior spliced in. I kinda wish there was a place to find more Wub-Wub. The game I liked least was "Brains & Hearts". Brains & Hearts is a card game, and I don't think those translate super well to the 8-bit aesthetic, but there's definitely a reasonable puzzle in that game. Retro Game Crunch is a good weekend obsession, to play through all the games and beat those that have a definitive end, and get the good chemicals from completing something. I don't know that I'll keep it installed to come back to once I've finished Paradox Lost and Shuten, but I might give Wub-Wub another playthrough before I'm done.

Retro Game Crunch is an inventive indie collection that pays tribute to the golden age of gaming while constantly challenging the conventions that defined it. Developed by Shaun Inman, Rusty Moyher, and Matt Grimm and published by Retro Game Crunch, the game is built around the idea of recreating the excitement of discovering classic cartridges from the 8-bit era. Rather than presenting straightforward retro clones, the collection offers a series of compact adventures that start with familiar concepts before introducing unexpected twists. This approach transforms what could have been a simple nostalgia project into a surprisingly creative and memorable experience. At first glance, the game appears to be a celebration of classic genres. Players encounter platformers, action games, shooters, and exploration-focused adventures that immediately evoke memories of early console gaming. The pixel art visuals embrace a deliberately old-school appearance, complete with colorful sprites, simple animations, and environments that resemble the limitations of vintage hardware. Accompanying the visuals is a soundtrack filled with energetic chiptune-inspired music that reinforces the retro atmosp…
