✦ AI summary

Back is a stylish live-action psychological horror experience with solid atmosphere and filmmaking that delivers some genuinely unsettling moments, though players find it falls short as an interactive game. The main criticisms center on the experience feeling more like a passive movie with minimal meaningful choices and consequences, a very short runtime even for completionists, and occasional tonal inconsistencies where the horror doesn't always land. Players recommend it as an atmospheric visual experience, particularly if purchased on sale, rather than a game with real gameplay depth.

Back, developed and published by Mystery Crown, is a live-action psychological horror experience that blends film and interactivity into a tense and unnerving narrative. The story begins with Ren Xing, a seemingly ordinary man invited to a villa for what appears to be a simple real-estate shoot. As the camera rolls and the scenes unfold, reality begins to distort, and the peaceful façade of the location gives way to a sinister mystery. What starts as a routine professional visit soon spirals into a nightmare of supernatural occurrences, cryptic conspiracies, and impossible choices. The game’s atmosphere builds slowly, relying on the unease of ordinary moments that slip into madness. Each decision you make carries weight, each scene presses deeper into uncertainty, and the line between what is filmed and what is real becomes terrifyingly blurred. What sets Back apart from most horror games is its dedication to full-motion video as its primary storytelling tool. Rather than traditional 3D models or animation, it uses live actors and real settings to pull players into an almost cinematic experience. The realism of human expression, combined with the claustrophobic camera work and del…

The first game in the Back series ~ . I like this one, it is a very short game that you can complete in less than 3 hours but there aren't many FMV horrors around and this one is not bad. The story is nice, the actress are great, it's an ok location, subtitles works and the cinematography is good. There are extras in the form of 18 pictures which would be nice but for some reason you can't just see the picture in full screen. Mystery Crown has a very identifiable style that I have to say doesn't always work. Long video, usually with nothing much going on in the scene and really limited gameplay with very annoying things like having to click for no reason things in a way that is (poorly) tricking you in to think you are playing and interacting with the game where you are not; very limited choices (in another game from them there's a 2 options choice that leads you to exactly the same results and literally plays the same) and so on. However in this case, while Back is limited, to me it felt like the most game play I got from a Mystery Crown horror and overall I enjoyed it. Made me want to play the sequels and I still want more games to follow. Hardly a masterpiece but if you like FMV…

Just played this last night, this was our first time trying an FMV game, and it's honestly a pretty fun experience! If you're expecting high quality scares with lots of creepy buildup and very creative monster designs with a mindblowing story, this is NOT that game... However, it has its own charm to it with quite light hearted scares, like a good escape room experience. Would recommend if you have a couple hours to spend and wanna just switch off your brain for a simple enjoyable experience. Making wrong decisions also doesn't punish you because you can easily load back and just replay it. Negatives: the sound engineer did a horrible job at the loading screen. Volume was VERY loud upon startup, so headphone users, adjust your volume first, because the music on the game menu was too loud. Translation also gets pretty bad, and the subs can get some stuff wrong sometimes. I know a little bit of Mandarin and realise some of the subtitles are wrong, but still understandable. Positives: If you're into B-horror movies, and like escape rooms, this one is worth your time. Story wasn't too deep and was quite decent for the price. Some scenes end up having some narm charm, and unintentio…

More goofy than horrifying. It has some charm to it, but no challenge. Value is subjective, but it's very short even if you go for all scenes/endings, so I recommend picking it up on sale.

Gave me 50/50 choices, lost all 50/50 choices. 5/10 game, would peep again.
