The Making of Karateka

The Making of Karateka is a fascinating example of how video game history can be preserved without reducing it to a collection of screenshots, interviews, and old software hidden behind separate menus. Developed by Digital Eclipse and published by Digital Eclipse and Atari, this interactive documentary explores the creation of Jordan Mechner’s Karateka and the experiments that eventually led to one of the most memorable early examples of cinematic game design. Instead of treating the original title as an isolated artifact, the collection reconstructs the creative journey behind it through playable prototypes, archival documents, photographs, design materials, interviews, videos, and multiple versions of the game. The central timeline is what makes the experience distinctive. Historical materials are arranged chronologically, allowing players to follow Mechner’s progression from his earliest experiments to the development of Karateka. Documents and commentary explain what was happening during different stages, while playable builds allow many of those ideas to be experienced directly. YES!

When I first bought this, I was expecting this to be just a game compilation of Karateka. It is not. It is so much more. This is a documentary with games as extras in it. You have access to the Apple II, C64, Atari 800, and a remastered version of the original Karateka. It briefly mentioned the remake from 2012 which is not included (however I last saw it for under a dollar on Steam). If you read at the top there is a quick access to the game library. It also includes some of Jordan Mechner's earlier games as well as prototypes of the Apple II versions of Karateka. However i recommend going through the documentaries before you play. I found the videos included in this documentary very interesting and you see what leads up to the creation of Karateka.

Not as interesting to me personally as Digital Eclipse's later work with Tetris, but it's still easy to see why this codified their modern Digital Museum project format. Karateka is also in its own right pretty interesting for a game I'd never heard of before the documentary game hit. It's really fascinating to see Karateka take some extremely early baby steps into the world of narrative and cinematic framing in video games at a time when the sheer limitations of the hardware available made such things extremely difficult to even approximate. The Karateka Remastered production is also really cool, strikes a strong balance between honoring the original rotoscoping and minimalist framing and adding in just enough quality of life performance improvements and visual flourishes to better convey the original vision. 4/5 stars

Digital Eclipse strikes us with 'The Making of Karateka,' a first in their lineup of "Gold Master" series in which they present a documentary presented with some historical pieces that also gives you a game collection with it and Karateka's is a mostly fantastic package to go through. Compared to 'Tetris Forever' (as of this review the only 2 I've tried in the series) the pacing and documental telling of how Karateka was made is way more consistent to follow, it rarely broke up the video sections abruptly and actually let people talk. It's a really good watch especially when you see Jordan Mechner doing things like rotoscoping the animations frame by frame or even how his father Francis Mechner inspired a lot of the choices in the game including the rotoscoping and heck he even composed the soundtrack of Karateka on multiple platforms as well, just a fun watch when looking at everything from how Karateka set a standard to how handmade everything truly was with it, just really good. The game collection here is pretty good even if I did want to see a couple more versions of Karateka here, but this could've been done to licensing issues considering a good portion of ports weren't do…

An amasing insight in one of the most consequential games of all time. Being the first in so many things and also having the developers direct commentary and notes makes this a must-have for anyone even remotely intrested in older games and their preservation.
