About Samurai Ace
Samurai Ace is a vertical-scrolling shoot-em-up where you pilot one of six uniquely themed aircraft through eight stages to stop a heretical cult from resurrecting an evil god in a fantastical Sengoku-era world. Its standout blend of simple 8-direction controls, multiple playable characters with distinct narratives, and 21 branching story paths across multiple endings set it apart from standard arcade shooters.
Samurai Ace — PSIKYO’s retro shmup with branching routes & co-op
TL;DR: A classic top-down shoot ’em up with simple two-button controls, punchy arcade pacing, and surprisingly strong replay value thanks to its branching routes and multiple endings.
[1] Intro :
Samurai Ace feels like opening a time capsule from the golden era of arcade shooters—fast, flashy, and immediately readable. The premise is delightfully weird (old-meets-new tech and mysticism), and the “just one more run” energy hits hard from the first stage.
[2] Game Experience :
At its core, it’s clean and classic: move in 8 directions, shoot, and bomb. But it doesn’t stop at “simple.” Charging your shot to unleash a stronger special attack adds a satisfying rhythm, and the game’s real hook is how often it changes your journey. With multiple branching paths (and multiple endings), runs don’t all blend together—your route becomes part of the strategy, whether you’re chasing survival or score. The character roster also helps keep things fresh: different pilots bring different vibes, and the stages are built for that old-school “learn the patterns, push for mastery…18 found this helpful
Balance is an absolute joke rn, the tier gap is way too huge. Idk what Miko is even supposed to do, clunky kit + no dmg + her animation locks are longer than my actual life. Wasted such good art.

Reviews: 4/10
2 found this helpful
A charming and fast-paced classic that still holds up today! Samurai Aces is a fantastic introduction to Psikyo’s signature arcade style. The game is easy to pick up but surprisingly challenging, with short stages, aggressive enemy patterns, and intense boss fights that keep you constantly engaged. Each character has unique shots and bombs, which adds great replay value and encourages experimentation. The pacing is one of the game's biggest strengths — it never wastes your time. Runs are quick, making it perfect for both casual sessions and score-chasing attempts. The difficulty ramps up nicely, and the randomized elements help keep repeated playthroughs fresh. Visually, the colorful feudal-Japan-meets-steampunk aesthetic gives the game a lot of personality, and the character interactions between stages are charming and humorous. The soundtrack is also catchy and fits the arcade atmosphere perfectly. If you enjoy classic arcade shooters, especially Psikyo-style games with tight gameplay and high replayability, Samurai Aces is absolutely worth playing. A simple but very addictive shoot 'em up that laid the foundation for many great titles that followed. Highly recommended!2 found this helpful
Samurai Aces, developed by Psikyo, is the foundation of what would become staples in their shmup games. With a unique style inspired by the Sengoku period, it presents an art style full of expressive, distinctive characters reminiscent of games like Sonic Wings. Like many arcade games of its era, Samurai Aces can be brutally difficult. Enemy bullets can feel random at times, and success often depends on how well the player can route the stages. Memorization of enemy patterns is more important than reflexes, and a mix of slow bullets with faster ones can make later stages highly challenging—but that’s part of the appeal. Once you understand the patterns, it’s highly satisfying to see gradual improvement. I understand this is a re-release by a different company, but as far as I’m aware, it is identical to the previous version available here on Steam. If you are a fan of classic shmups, Samurai Aces is a worthy addition to your collection. A few cons about this release are the lack of a training mode or save states for practice. It’s a very straightforward port with the bare minimum, and considering shmups often require constant practice, it would be nice if training options were a…1 found this helpful
I only bought this game to complete the collection. The game I really wanted to get during this second publishing was TENGAI (Samurai Aces II). The port is good, by the way. No glitches or what have you.1 found this helpful
